16 Inch wheels on MK1. Good or bad idea/will they fit without modification?

14" PanaSports I think as I have on my own.

Very rare now to see a set in mint condition, never mind resto worthy.
Mine were very cheap…as they were rough as a bear’s bottom with piles but they look OK now from 6 feet.
Big issue as I found are OEM centres…they are there…at around Pre Covid £90.00 a set.
Pretty much ding one, Oh Dear.

No longer available then??
Seems a shame…

Still out there…in a manner of speaking.
£1000.00 plus a set.
I paid less than £100.00 for 4.
14" is a 5 issue.

14" seem available for old Bimmers & 'Bs though.
No idea about offsets etcl

love it mate, SE is special edition right?

You can get Panasports in pretty much any fitting and offset you like. Moss UK used to sell them for years. The 14" Panasports in Japan came in two flavours. There is an aftermarket one, with the offset engraved into the metal. The other version was sold in M2-Inc’s shop, Mazda’s boutique upgrade shop. Like the 15" fitted to the M2-Inc cars, the offset is cast in raised relief. They would have also come with a chrome “M2” centre cap. Spotted at one of the MX5OC National Rallys

I think these wheels will struggle to clear the front brake calipers on a Mk1.

£1000 is comparable to something like a Enkei RPF1, whch are a fraction of the weight.

There are cheaper alternatives. Rota do the RB, 15"in two different widths. Its more Panasport style, in terms of the banana spokes.

RB also does the RKR, which is more like the Watanabe version, but its only available in stupidly low offsets.

The Maxilite from Switzerland follows the Minilite original style more (straighter spokes, less bling finish). Weight is comparable to the Mk2 15". I had a set with a 35mm offset, but they wouldn’t clear the 1.8 brakes (this is something that is quite common with Minilite style wheels, including Panasports, due to the thickness of the spokes), and needed 5mm shims. The company has since brought out a 30mm offset version.

I mentioned Watanabe. RS Watanabe is another Japanese manufacturer (Panasport is Japanese) to build a licensed version of the Minilite. They come in various versions. Most are average weight, but there are mag alloy versions around. There is also a 2-piece split rim version that is faily easy to find used, and most are 14".

Enkei also do a version; they revived a 1970s Rally design of theirs, the Comp-E, limited colours. Pricey

Yep - took me a while to find one, not too many around. Trying to keep it as standard as I can, but wheels need a refurb. Trouble is original spec was polished which is a bit bling for me!
