2.0 Sport NC Handling Advice

Not convinced the description of the Yoko’s meets my brief exactly…

“Designed for mid-range sedans, the Yokohama BluEarth-GT AE51 is part of Yokohama’s fuel efficient BluEarth range and provides greater fuel efficiency with improved wet grip alongside long mileage”

Sounds like an eco rather than sports tyre…

Appreciate i’m a day late to the party but +1 for properly inflated high quality tyres and Mr Roddison’s eyes on the geometry. Has served us well so far.

I had 4 Kumho fitted to my daily driver
(a SEAT ) back in July. I first got prices from Blackcircles for home delivery then a quote from my local garage to fit them. The garage was no longer in the Blackcircles fitting scheme, long story short as NickD has mentioned before the margins are pretty slim, they make very little on each tyre.
Anyway when I asked about the price of fitting my tyres (from Blackcircles) they offered to quote for the tyres and fitting. Job done, they worked out cheaper, and they had the Kumhos in the next day and all fitted. Very happy with the service I received.
NickD as mentioned fitted my Kumhos to my NC around 4 years ago, I was fortunate he was doing a track day at Donnington park so I popped over there with my spare set of alloys to get them fitted. He does a great job, recommended.:+1:

Decided to stop messing about with Black Circles, cancelled the order and I’m off to see (the super helpful) Nick later this afternoon :+1:

Good call

All sorted, new set of Kumho’s fitted by Nick tonight, had a decent blast back from Northampton and the car feels totally different, much less twitchy and the DSC light got a rest for once…regardless of roundabout exit strategy :grimacing:

Thanks again for your help all :+1:

OK Mazdarati, I will now give you my opinion. I have modified my MX and could bore you with many details as one modification then affects another mod and so on like dominoes. I have 310 bhp to play with so I opted for Toyos as my tyre choice which as others rightly say is the first place to start. However before going further you must decide what you intend to use the car for before taking the next step. If I assume correctly its going to be either a summer car and/or every day car then a standard geometry set up will be fine. If however you want to do fast road with the odd track day then a different set up will be required and changing to better springs or, in my case, coil overs. Suppose it all depends on your budget. That said I would only recommend Wheels In Motion for geo (and tyres too) after the truly professional way they treat the car and the customer. Its a 2 hour drive there for me but worth every minute. Good luck with your new fun car.

Thanks for the reply - 310bhp must be unruly at best!:grinning:

I have a farcically large and obnoxious SUV for daily/family duties, so this is 100% a toy for blowing off steam (I bought the absolute antidote to my daily car) and cheeky weekends /road trips with the wife. I don’t want a track car (though I will do some track days) but a focussed road car that doesn’t embarrass itself on the track. The tyres have made a big difference, but as always are now showing up weaknesses in other areas.

By the sounds of it, alignment is the next (cheap) thing to sort before I start getting properly into the suspension. Long term I’ll almost certainly end up with coil overs, arbs and an ever depleting bank balance, but I’m in no rush - I want to learn the car properly and work out it’s weaknesses over time. The research is at least 50% of the fun!

Having 310 bhp makes the car come even more alive but again its all about bringing various aspects that affect each other together, but all depends on your budget. Mine is geo is set up for fast road and track. originally I had Eibach springs put on but after a while could not get on with them, they seems to bottom out too much for me. I spoke to Tony at Wheels In Motion and he suggested we swap them for Gaz springs and redo geo obviously. These worked better and had no issues with them and worked well with the Bilstein shox the Sport has as standard.

Uprated Eibach anti roll bars were the best bang for buck upgrade I did to my NC. They made an immediate difference to the handling, with it being planted now.
