How old does a child need to be before he can safely ride in an MX5 with a child seat?
With a correctly fitted child seat, in a NON-airbag car, as young as you like.
Which MX5s don’t have the airbags?
Early Mk.1s - This was the “Back to Basics” sports car!
No M1’s had air bags apart from the 1.8iS.
I’ve seen a few early Roadsters (1.6) with drivers airbag.
Sorry, no UK spec. cars…
Miata have airbags from very early as well.
Thank you for your advice. I will pass it on.

Or if you want the practicality of being able to go out as a family, Get a MK1 with a boot lid luggage rack and fit the kiddie seat on there, (You might need to get the little one some flying gogles… Just to be on the safe side). LOL
The wife would’nt let me try that one when i suggested it.
So i left her home and just took the baby out with me.
It was the only way we could get him to go to sleep.
We must have done thousands of miles that way.

the airbag thing is a red herring…
w ith a forward facing seat, ie stage 2 onwards, pass airbag fine.my 3 year old rides all the time in my 2002, and in my 1991.
I recently saw for sale on the planet MX5 website a genuine Mazda child seat for a mk2/2.5 that had a chip inside it that de-activated the passenger airbag.
