5 on-the-brain

I’m sitting at work. I like my job alot, and I’m having a decent enough day. No complaints here.

And yet, all I want to be doing is driving home, freezing with the roof down and taking corners just that little bit too quickly.

Dear god I love this car…

I know what you mean.

I’ve spent the last several years working in main car dealerships as a sales person, and people often ask me what do you drive ?

I tell them what ever car i’m in that week, and add “when i want to go for a propper drive i take my mx-5”

and they look at me as if i’m some kind of alien or something.

Then i see them driving off in their new Freelander or Zafira, and think to myself “if only you knew what your missing”

They have’nt got a clue !!!

I love that feeling of actually looking forward to driving! Hadn’t had that since I was 17 til I got my 5 lol

I know exactly what you all mean.

The wife is still wondering why I am volunteering to drop the Xmas card off in person this year instead of posting them…[A]

Some dark night, roof down action is the reason [:P]

Get to spread some seasonal good will as well I suppost

I have just read this again after posting and realised how naughty it could sound!

You all know what I mean

As Joey would say -

Yeah we do![:P]

Felt exactly that way today & had the day off [:D] so went for a nice long drive then treated the old girl to a shine.

Roll on summer!

Amen to all the above.

I look forward to the short drive to and from work every day; I go out and drive in the evenings and on weekends just for the hell of it. Sometimes I listen to loud music, other times I just listen to the sound of the car. I take in the admiring glances from other drivers, and smile at the envious aggression I sometimes suffer from rednecks in pickups and dads in people carriers.

Some of my enthusiasm can be attributed to the fact that I’ve only had my beautiful R-Ltd for a couple of weeks. But I did all the same things in my previous '5, which I owned for two years.

There is something about the Mk 1 which is just right. I honestly think I love my car. I don’t just like it a lot.

How the hell do you write in paragraphs on this forum?!

I’ve always looked forward to the daily commute, but the MX5 does make it that extra bit nicer, especially with the roof down

I went from A to B in a Nissan Sunny
Auto for the last four years. The sunny is a very practical 5 door
family saloon. The Sunny took all my equipment for work. I laughed
at Jeremy Clarkson’s view of “Carbon Emissions”, walked to the
shops, recycled and sat safe in my comfy home remembering my younger
days of motorcycle speed and danger, after all, I was now too old for
that kind of thing.

While the Sunny was having repairs done
on it’s last MOT I borrowed a friends MX5 for the day. That was the
day that changed my life. I just had to have one. I was no longer
working for a living, I was working for a machine.

Then I got my Eunos… I no longer see
getting to work as going from A to B, I now drive to work. I no
longer walk to the shops, I now drive to the shops and it takes me
two hours longer than it did walking. I still recycle glass and
plastic but I do that in different towns. “Abbey Barn Gyratory
System” is no longer a traffic flow system… it is five levels of
drift. Sometimes, when I drive home, I do not stop but go back round
to practice getting a better line through the corners. I love the
sound of the car so much that if my passenger tries to strike up
conversation I just respond “Just a moment… I’m trying to lose
the police helicopter”, that always makes them go quiet. I now
avoid motorways (and most “A” roads). A weekday is another day
to take the Eunos for a spin. When people ask me about my new car I
just respond with “It goes VROOM!” and nod like a Muppet, they
look into my eyes and then get that scared look and start to back
away. I’ve started quoting lines from Mad Max like “speed’s just a
question of money. How fast can you go?” and “You’ve seen it!..
You’ve heard it!.. and you’re still asking questions? ”. That
clunk into second lets you know it has a gearbox. It’s not love it’s
Zen. An annoying rattle just means the exhaust is not making enough
noise. I don’t warm the engine, I get “in tune”.

I drive a Eunos Roadster and brakes are
for woosies.
Sorry but I dont have time to reply to responses to this post as I am just going out for a spin [:D]
All the best
 Iain

I have just read this again after posting and realised how naughty it could sound!

You would have to be pretty fit to get some roof up action [6]

I know what you mean. I’ve been to and from work in the Mazda 6 all week and am missing my '5! I think the cars will be getting swapped over this evening… [:D]

i dont have the luxury of a drive to & from work as i work at home (although i would’nt call rush hour driving around here a luxury).

instead, on a quiet day i have to find myself an excuse to go out & visit a client

And even if you beat it into them with a baseball bat, they’re still pretty unlikely to have a clue!!!

What’s that HD T-shirt? - “If I had to explain, you wouldn’t understand”  [:D]

Had my 5 in 2002, now have two of them, and I still have to grin madly everytime I pick up the keys…

I always love driving my mx5 - just put a mx 5 sticker on from the club saying ‘I prefer being topless in my mx 5’.  Sad eh ?

But I really hate it when traffic behind get too close parking up behind in a queue.

I would never ever have a boring car again.  I don’t drive fast as I am not a racer and would not know how to handle it like J Clarkson and Hamster, and I certainly do not want to ruin it or ruin the tyres!  My pride and joy.

There’s a lot of love in this room lol

Hi I keep telling my wife she should get her top off more often but she’s having none of it. OH hang on your talking about your roof arn’t you.

Happy new year all!
I really like what this room has become! Accordingly, a progress report…

Well, I’ve had the car for over 2 weeks now, and have been driving around in all weathers (literally all of them - strange season, eh!) with the roof down, heater and stereo blazing. Chav-y? Perhaps, but its not a chav car, and it is decent music (oh, the bemused faces as I blast past with the top down in early January with John Mayall blaring out of the speakers!). Needless to say (and to prevent potential flaming), I’ve been a tad more subtle at night!
I am considering a windblocker for temperature reasons, however a scarf does work wonders, and doesn’t it rather dull the sensation of ‘wind in your hair’ motoring?
My friends and family all smile when they see the car - its a feelgood car. Though it has sort of saddened me that most of my friends of similar ages (around 22) who are mostly without children all seem to drive boring hatches, and tell me they love these cars but claim that they couldn’t live with 2 seats. So many people would love an MX- 5 or a similar type of car (MGF, CRX, MR2 et al), but suffer from this irrational fear of 2 seats - when exactly are you planning on doing it then - are you waiting till you retire??!!
I have already had 2 incidents where life would have been easier with a 4/5 seater. But its an unusual time of year - and even then, we coped, it really isn’t the end of the world if we have to reorganise lifts etc. Its not ideal, but its a worthy price to pay. And once I get grown up and coupled-up (he says with fingers crossed) then having a practical car aswell is perfectly normal, eh?
Right, I’m off to get my 5 lifted so I can find where this damned noise is coming from (detailed in thread in The Garage).  Take it easy folks.
