62 plate Mx-5 KURO 2.0 body wide rust - Mazda denial, don't get caught out

Chris, I think we need to establish a couple of things here, firstly accusing a forum user of abuse is pretty strong language in my book, if you feel that you have been abused by myself, then I certainly apologise. I fail to see where any of my posts have been less than courteous, I do not deal in bad manners, I speak as I expect to be spoken to, all I have been doing is asking a series of questions to establish some of the issues you hit during the whole debacle, I have done so in a courteous manner as far as I can tell, if you feel otherwise then please take the poinst you feel have overstepped a mark with the moderators.

Moderators, with respect, can you please review my comments  and questions on this thread and if I have been abusive to physiochris, then please sanction me as the rules of the forum decree, I personally find these accusations of being abusive and being a “spoiler” offensive myself. I use a number of MX5 forums and I have a reputation of fairness, politeness, a level of geniality and a certain amount of knowledge of these cars. The OPs accusations I feel are unfounded and perhaps misguided, are we perhaps now in a world where to challenge and ask extremely pertinent questions on such a serious subject are viewed as abuse? I sincerely hope not. Perhaps it is a good job that the OP did not put this post up on the likes of MX5n**z, now there is a forum that thrives on abuse and attracts many a “spoiler”.

Chris, my goal here has been to establish a number of facts regarding the issues you have had with your car, some of which you seem reluctant to part with. If you care to look at some of my earlier posts I asked for the VIN or if you couldn’t find that then the reg number would do. My concern is that you say that your Kuro that you bought brand new, after four months was in such a bad way with rust on a number of the panels that you eventually got the dealer to organise a buy back from you. The very non commital attitude of MMUK is typical of them although it must always be remembered that when you buy a car, or any goods for that matter your contract lies with the seller not the manufacturer, the seller must legally act as a conduit between you and the manufacturer.

My gut feel is that this appears very much to be a rogue car, this I have already stated politely, bearing in mind I am now on my third Mk3 variant of the car, my previous two were run until they were three years old with circa 30k miles on both of them and there were no corrosion issues on either of them.

I am an established and competent detailer and knew every cm of those cars, if there was any corrosion on those cars it would have been spotted and the issue taken up with the dealer. My present Sport Black model that I bought in September last year if finally going through a thorough detailing. I finished day three of this process last night and due to your post I have been especially thorough in checking for any issues with rust or indeed any flaws in the paintwork at all. I intend to get into the final stages of the detailing works today and will again be checking every cm of the bodywork to see if I find any issue, if I do, a trip to the dealer will be on the cards.

I’ve looked at the whole thread [I’ve been following it from the begining] and I have to say that I don’t see any abuse from Steveti. A couple of questions have been asked and answered, if the op can’t find the vin or rego number, I’m not surprised. They would however really help to prevent anyone else from getting a real old dog

With genuine respect Geoff,I agree the reg could help in my view but the OP will have it on his insurance documents as just one source. Not rocket science is it?

Opinions, as ever, will differ but previousely owned vehicles just don’t fall off the planet and render themselves 100% untraceable.

PS…is it not way past your bedtime in Oz feller?Shock

I’ll get me coat!

Geoff, many thanks for your vote of confidence regarding the abuse claim. As I have said, I try to be respectful of others, that will not prevent me from asking pointed questions though in a polite manner. There is a distinction between insisting on answers to a polite question and being abusive.

Thanks for flagging this, will certainly be keeping an eye on my Kuro as they were all built at the same time. Mine was in storage/dealership unregistered until March, but if it starts to rust like this it’s going back.

If the OP notified the DVLA of the sale then they reply with a slip with the registraion number confirming receipt. The DVLA advise that this is retained. The VIN would also be on the purchase invoice.

I was not aware of that so I shall have a look.

For those who would like to know the reg was SK62 NPE. There was, I believe only circa 350 hard tops sold in the UK however, so I would think just to keep a good look out if you buy one - especailly pearl white, as those are both the colours of the cars for which with my own eyes I have seen a problem.

I apologise for my overreaction however what would apparently be obvious places for you to lok for a vin are not necessarily obvious to us all. I will check the DVLA slip as I know I have that.

Thanks for this info, I’m sure it will be distributed around the various MX5 forums as a vehicle that should be inspected with a fine tooth comb if anyone is considering a purchase or as I would, avoid altogether.

With respect, I’m pretty sure that reg number has been on various documents in your possession and could have been put up on this thread when it was first politely requested, as I recall the request was for VIN or reg number. Apologies for that note of negativity but you can hardly blame some for viewing this with a little suspicion when there appeared to be so much reluctance in giving simple details.

Anyway, I certainly appreciate seeing the number and will certainly make it known on the sites I frequent. Thanks again.

On a positive note, five full days of detailing my Spirited Green Sport Black have drawn a complete blank on any body corrosion whatsoever and every mm has been looked at now. Plenty stonechips because of Mazda’s legendary soft paint but nothing through to the metal that will allow corrosion to kick off.

Just to show there is a flipside; no corrosion in sight, perhaps with the caveat yet?

Superb!Stick Tongue Out

Just a point of observation.  Where I live there is an Arnold Clark dealership for Fiat. and Jeep, I think, whatever that is!  But I notice that there are always quite a number of new, pre registered cars for sale, all with Scots registrations.  When I saw yours was SK (Edinburgh) it rang a bell.  I wonder what is going on?  Perhaps someone in the trade knows the answer, and, more importantly is willing to share the information.

Regards  Geoff Peace.

Not sure if there is any signifficance to it Geoff but all Mazda cars enter the UK via one port, that is Rosyth.

Well that is interesting.  Also, Arnold Clark is the largest car dealer in Scotland, so says Wikipedia.  Probably the head office is in Glasgow or Edinburgh. hence Scots registrations.

Regards  Geoff Peace.

As I say, they all enter via Rosyth but then get distributed to all over the UK. As far as I’m aware Mazda have done this for around six or seven years now, no doubt it must be cheaper to bring them all in at one dock for distribution. Of course AC may also grab the lions share and almost put themselves in the position of being a sub distributer for the brand. All possibilities I suppose.

Just to be contrary though, mine was first registered with Phoenix Mazda, although my dealer of choice for servicing is indeed a branch of Arnold Clark. I had a chat a while back with one of the sales staff and interestingly Arnold Clark appears to operate on a franchised basis, they supply the metal, the uniforms, the signage for the premisis and they essentially operate inder a set of guidances and procedures defined by AC. I think this is one reason you can get variances in the way they are run, all these places are only as good as the manager wants it to be, thankfully I have a good one.

Love the colour of your 5 Steveti not seen this on a Mk111 before. Any way I have a 2006 2.0Ltr with 82k on the clock and is in excellent condition just a couple of stone chips. my local garage put it on their ramp for me and we went over it with a fine tooth combe, again other than surface rust on the suspension it is corrosion free . Iam now on my fourth Mx5 Mk1 2 2.5 and now Mk111 and have not had any what I consider serious corrosion. Sills have been the issue on all 3 but I sorted that with comparative ease. I for one will not be buying anything but a Mx5 until the day I cease being able to drive safely

Looking at a 13 reg sport tech and wonder whether it transpired that mx5s, other than the two white Kuros, were affected by this all panel rust after few months issue that may be caused by inferior steel from China / the sea following 2011’s tragic tsunami?

Seemed more sensible to post here, as my question pertains to the issue raised by the OP, rather than start a new thread.

Has anyone else experienced similar to this?

Thanks

Mazda rust issues predate the Japanese meltdown. Chinese steel is used in about 25% of all car production.

But the rusting pattern seen by the OP doesn’t seem to be all that common.

My velocity red 62 plate Kuro is pretty much rust free just a few very light patches on the underside suspension components.

Well a friends 2013 Red Mercedes SLK has the lacquer coat peeling off every panel. No rust at all but not looking good. The car was examined by the local Mercedes approved body shop and they said it was a manufacturing fault. Mercedes Germany as of four months since have not replied. The local dealer reckons it will be a positive reply but the owner now wants to trade the car in.

The Merc dealer said they will give him the trade in less £2k as the car may stay with them for a while before it is sorted.

So Mazda are just one company not being up to speed on customer relations.

I know this is an old thread, but having read the OP’s original post about never having another Mazda, I can empathise.

I went through a lengthy battle on a 3 year old Fiesta many many years ago.

I did eventually have the matter resolved, but it took about 6 weeks of badgering Fords head office, and a letter to the CEO.

I guess they finally gave in to shut me up and make me go away.

I’d had nothing but Ford cars up to that time, I swore that I’d never have another.

That was 20 years ago.
