recently i discovered there is a bit of noise coming out from the engine area
from what i hear they are from area around the alternator, under the main engine valve
the noise is like summer insects yelling but it is not loud, cant really be heard from cabin if I shut all windows with soft top
the noise does not change with the rev, always stays about the same volume
but is likely to be a bit noiser in cold weather than in warm (and seems if engine is warm the noise will have almost gone!)
so
what would be the likely cause? old water pump bearing or timing belt tensioner bearing? or maybe some leaking valve?
or any common fault do you think?
cheers

Hi
On Monday I think that I had the same problem as you describe. I spent ages with my head stuck under the bonnet in various positions trying to locate the source of the noise. I eventually tied it down to be coming from one of the pulleys at the front of the engine. Like you, I thought “Mabye a collapsed bearing?” At about this time, my father in law walked up and had a listen. Straight away he said that it sounded like a dry “v” belt. He had seen this many times during his years in the printing trade. As quick as a flash returned with a spray can of “belt dressing” and after one quick squirt the noise dissappeared! This was on Monday and the noise has not returned, I’ll keep you posted…
where is the V belt? the big belt at the front end of engine?
cheers
