a470 merthyr to brecon around to dan yr rog caves to glyneath up old glyneath bank over rhigos mountain nice drive 50 miler
Keep going north from Brecon, all the way to Llandudo - good driving road all the way across Wales. Some fantastic scenery - keep your camera handy!
Popular with two wheelers!
Bear off left at Llanidloes and make your way over the mountains to Machynlleth, motoring heaven[H]
Also VERY popular with the old bill! lol
The road from Ebbw Vale to Bwlch (sp?) is mega!
I shall second that. The B4560. Not a massively long road but then it means one can run down and then back up and then down again until the sun goes down. Correct spelling too .
Whilst the A470 is a good road it attracts everyone not just enthusiasts being a major trunk road so getting caught behind those less enthusiastic or wagons et al is highly likely unless you plan a run at 04:00 on a sunday morning. It’s the same as the A44 running thro’ Wales. Fab road but timing is everything - hence why i stick to the mountain road whenever possible.
On the first post, add the A4059, Rhigos-Penderyn-rejoin the 470 just below the Mountain Centre (Pen y fan car park area). Bliss. (Watch the wooly backs!)
That mention of Machynlleth? Come south from town, over the golf course,up over the ridge to the tin mine. ~I think it’s unclassified, the first bit, but follow the sign to Forge, then Star Inn. just before you rejoin the B4518, pull in to the view point and look north back up the valley. Stunning view, stunning (usualy Camera free_ road.
The viewpoint over the Dylife Gorge… a BMW Z went down there about 3 months ago.
Both occupants survived with minor injuries
280’ drop!!
Oh and, since this was about the area near MT…
up the A470 - near the Brecon Reservoir
