has anyone got any advice on why my abs light pops on now and again (more ‘on’ as time goes by)?
white MK1 1.8iS
this happens when driving no matter if i drive over a bump etc and obviously the abs wont work when the light is on. I have checked the manual and it just says the abs is not working right and to contact the dealer. Im trying to avoid that and thought i would ask if anyone knows what the problem might be?
p.s i was a forum member before the switch over. gutted i lost my account.
It is most probably a sensor that has failed - a reasonably competent garage (not strictly) a dealer should be able to sort it for you, for not a massive amount of money.
It might simply be a bad earth or poor connection somewhere though.
i must admit i hoped it would be a sensor problem, i just got concerned by the abs actually failing and i wanted to see if anyone knew if if had some other meaning like an air lock in the abs unit?
time to get the spanners out and clean up the sensors see if that helps.
cheers - and thanks for moving to the correct category.
Your brakes won’t fail if the abs light is on the abs complements the braking system you will still have the foundation brakes and the servo assistance, check you front/rear wheel brgs as more than usuall end float will allow the sensor ring to move that little bit away from the sensor, yes by all means clean the sensors it has been rather wet and mucky, you should be able to find a local garage with the correct computer to put on your car to locate the problem the computer should find the fault a lot quicker than a ramdon look around but at least it gives you chance to look under the car having said that you may find a sensor wire loose so all is not lost eh[:D]
Strange that, my RAV 4 was playing up doing the same thing but as the car warmed up the light went off. It only happened twice and both times were when the temperature had been minus 4 or 5 deg overnight.
