My insurance company (Footman James) have offered the facility (at no cost) of getting an agreed value on my Mk1 MX5, on the basis that as Mk1’s get rarer really nice ones could go slightly up in value. Besides the 2 requisite photographs I would need an authoritative statement from an expert giving their estimation of the vehicles value. They suggested, and are happy to accept, such a statement from an officer of the MX5 Owners Club.
So the thing is… Does the club do such a thing? Would a regional coordinator be the man to do it? Is it worth doing anyway? And finally why am I having so much fun getting all involved with my MX5 like a kid with his first bicycle when I have had hundreds of brand new cars over the years??? I know the answer from the ladies would be “Because men never grow up”, but really for a cynical old dude like me I am surprised at my self.
I don’t see why the club can not do this, the M.G owners club (may i say at this point not the mgf rubbish but my mga,mgb and mdget cars were valued) did and still do,the only problem i can see and never agreed with was they asked for phtos to be sent to give you an agreed value, now my cars have and are well serviced, and well kept but without someone looking at them how can they give a true value???.
But saying that it would make me think about joining the club “are goeff,me old mate”
I “renewed” with Footman James this year, having been with AON last year, and never got round to getting the “valuation” done.
So, I asked the question of Footman James, “who can I get to do the valuation” They told me I did not need one, and to just to send in some decent photographs along with the vehicle condition report, and my valuation.
So, my car is a 1991 Roadster, and I valued it at £3k, cost me £2200 3 years ago, and spent a fair bit on it “tidying” it up. Yesterday, I received an amendment to my insurance schedule confirming they have agreed to my valuation [:D]
Was also pleased to hear that they do not charge any extra for the modifications (SS exhaust, aftermarket alloys, clear indicators/sidelights etc.) Nice not to get stitched up for once!!
I’m with Footman James (previously AON) on my RX-7. Limited mileage on a classic car policy, breakdown, agreed value etc etc and dirt cheap - Highly recommended
last time i reinsured in 2008 i turned down the offer of agreed value cover on the basis of extra cost & the self assurance of my brilliant driving ability!!!.
the next month i had a low speed coming together with a van & they wrote the car off (economically unviable repair or some such rubbish).
back on the road now after buying it back & now with even better paint job thanks to spanner, hammer, new wing & son in law’s compressor & i turned a small profit but, on hindsight, i wish i had taken the “agreed” deal.[Y]
we have just had a small accident in our 5 someone ran into the rear quarter at the moment the cost for the repair stands at 2k and the repair is going to go though unless there is any other damage when they strip it we will wait and see
Just very recently got an agreed value with Adrian Flux on my 96 UK Mk1, they required six photographs, front, rear, each side, engine, interior. Limited mileage and signed decleration of the current mileage, hopefully not required but as excellent examples are holding value or increasing I did think it was very important to have the agreed value, in fact I have a multiple car policywith Adrian Flux and has also covered the other three vehicles one a Eunos with all mods declared, very pleased with the service, price was £400 less than any others.
Mine is on an agreed valuation, I just had to provide some photos and say what my valuation was, nothing else required… It is 100% worth it, in the event of the car being written off you will get what the car is worth, rather than a veiled insult masquerading as a cheque!!
we had a small bump in our 1990 eunos 2 years ago in the same area the damage was also 2k the repair was done ok but i have been thinking about agreed value but as its my wife main car footman james said said she would loose her no claims if we went down that road
I’ve insured through them for the last 4 years since acquiring my Mk1 Eunos. The renewal this year offered a policy which was completely below the level of cover previously offered at a greatly increased price (40% increase). If I hadn’t checked the policy schedule against the previous years policy schedule I would not have noticed some of the items that had been taken off my policy - agreed value being one of them & another was a reduced mileage limitation - both of which could cause problems with a potential claim. There was no covering letter with the renewal advising of the downgraded policy & it was only because I checked against the previous years policy I picked it up. I know you should do this but I wonder how many people have not & fallen foul of this??
When I rang them up, their attitude was disgusting, it was almost a ‘like it or lump it’ attitude. I took the business elsewhere - A-Plan, who I must admit offered a much better customer service.
If you do a quick search on here you will realise that a number of members have had problems with Footman James. Glad I didn’t have to put a claim in with them because knowing what I know now I wouldn’t have the confidence in them sorting it out without hassle.
I think someone from the MX5 Owners Club needs to take this up with them officially, as a lot of members use FJ, my confidence in ‘Club’ offers is diminishing after dealing with FJ.
the price of my wifes car had gone up about £50 this year and thats with our 27 year old son added we have a limit of 5000 miles on it i also have a triumph herald 13/60 estate with them and that had gone up a lot it`s agreed valued( £7200 ) and the insurence went up about 40 % so i am going to shop around next year are you agreed on your eunos with a plan
