Air-con

I have just purchased a Eunos Roadster 1990 with air-con. As i don’t think i need this on a convertible and want to remove it to reduce weight.

Has anyone ever done this and how easy or difficult is it.

My advice is for you to wait until you have ridden in your car at the height of summer with the top down then make your mind up.

A bit of Chrissy day reading for you------

Agreed…The air con in mine is excellent. Works very well for demisting in winter months & is very handy if you get caught out with the roof up after a shower during the warmer months. Cant imagine it would save much weight to be honest.

But Geoffs links will help if you are determined to remove it.

Merry Xmas & enjoy your new car.

I have to agree with what has been said, and given that I have fitted air con I can tell you the weight you save is nothing compared to the safety of demisting in summer and winter.

Merry Christmas.

Thanks to everyone for the advice> I will have a think about it over the hols and then decide which way to go.

Thanks Jim

If I were you I would wait till the first rainy day until you make up your mind.

I wouldn’t own a car that didn’t have Air Con. Mine is brilliant at demisting windows after a shower, it is actually quicker to put the Air’ on coming through the ball vents that to use the heated rear screen!

Happy New Year everyone.

Hi Again everyone,

As the Eunos is not a car i will be using daily i decided to remove the air con so if anyone living in the manchester area wants a complete air con system including all the pipes (1 damaged) for free and is willing to come and collect it it’s yours.

Thanks again for the advice given by everyone.

You’re certainly not on holiday for long [:D]

I’m pretty sure that some people would bite your hand off for the complete system!

Did you consider keeping it for when you come to sell the car - clearly it is a desirable option!

Strange decision on almost every level but hey-ho - it’s your car! lol

Aircon was great for driving down through France with the roof down. Temp in the high 80’s but baseball cap, suntan lotion and aircon on and all  was fine

Rather than raise a fresh new question I thought I would add to this one.

Has onyone any idea of the costs involved in fitting air con to a mk3 (not sport) mx-5. Who can do it - is it worth it? will i get my money back - will it make the car more attractive? etc?

Regards

James

Did it actually work when you switched it on, you know, did it blow really cold air. That age of car could possibly have a worn out compressor clutch.

I got my kit from Mazda for £600 and fitted myself, dead easy to do just take your time and read the instructions at least twice before you start. Also don’t cut corners and remove whatever Mazda say, I know I tried it my way and it took longer [:D]  Then take the car back to the dealer to get it gassed, it cost me £90 for a fully pressure and vacuum test and a check after a year.

Oh one point mine is a MK2.5
