Hi all, my MX is running lean/under powered.
Upon disconnecting the air flow meter it has no effect on the running of the car. Its still as bad/poorly when connected as when disconnected, is this normal?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
If you post the year/engine size to get a better response.
Hi, its a 1998 MK2 1600 Roadster.
Could it be related to a temperature sensor/idle control valve?
I’m surprised that nobody has come along with a solution yet
Do you know for sure that it is running lean, keeping in mind that a lot of the symptoms for rich are the same - poor idle, poor performance & cutting out on heavy throttle should be pretty similar for both.
You might be as well trying to source a second hand air flow meter from somebody like MX5Heaven, or even a local breakers…
The fuel filter is worth changing as well - they are not expensive (so I’d go for genuine mazda part from mx5parts) since that could be restrciting fuel flow.
RE the AFM disconnected showing the same idle, I honestly couldn’t say either way, but I would not think that this would be normal.
Hi, thanks for that.
Managed to source a 2nd hand air flow meter, but this did not cure the problem.
Fuel filter is next on my list of things to do.
As for running lean, I now know that its running rich due to poor mpg, the odd backfire and splutter and very sluggish pick up.
Hi, the MX-5 will idle quite happily with the AFM disconnected. It’s not using the AFM signal until you try to drive off.
If it’s running rich now then the fuel filter may be OK. Is the new AFM making it run rich?
Update.
Car went to a place in Swansea for diagnostic testing. Poor compression on cylinder 3, turns out a valve is down, unsure if its inlet or exhaust as of yet, however, head will have to come off :(.
Its a gd job my Mx is under warranty with the garage I purchased it from :). Thanks for all your help and advice anyways.
