Air-vent pod faulty?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC1
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

Just started to play with the heating system as the weather is starting to chill with the roof down. Point heat at footwell-check. Heater on full- check. Adjust fan for toasty legs-check.
No heated seats so it’s all down to hot air to keep me comfortable.
Noticed that, despite looking identical, the center two of the four circular air vents dont shut off; ie: the button doesn’t depress.
Have I got two faulty vents or is there a possibility this is how they come?
Thanks

If I remember correctly that’s how they come.

Search will help you

Thanks, I did search but not as effectively

My NC is the same, it always seemed odd to me that they wouldn’t shut off.

Middle two deffo don’t shut off as std.

You can fit the shut off type very easily - I did it to stop the cold blast of air over the left hand after starting the car.

How are they removed? I’ve found videos showing the early type which just pull out but looking at photos of the NC vents it looks like they are possibly fixed from behind?

You need to remove the dash insert they are attached too.
There are two screws behind the stereo facia and one behind/above the glove box.
Then you just use trim tools to pop the insert out.

The vents are held in to the insert by two screws each.

God bless Mellens.net.

Thanks that’s really helpful. 2 closing vents ordered and hopefully no more air blowing where I don’t want it. With a bit of luck they will arrive by the weekend and I can work on the MX5 rather than my nieces VW T5!!

Fitted the closing vents today. It was an easy job to do but I really didn’t enjoy prying the dash panel off! There was a definite fear of hearing a snapping sound.
