I go a set of these; quite pleased at the price, £16 from Mazda. But they’re no good; they are a McGuard nut (Mazda boox); far too tall for BBS wheels (or any other where there is a cover). Apparently, the design has been recently changed. Luckily, the dealer is happy to take them back.
McGard 24012 nuts have been recommended, but Halfords want £33 for them; more than twice as much as Mazda want for their (incorrect) nuts.
I’ve lost the key on mine; the splined nut variety, which I’m sure were the type originally sold by Mazda UK. Any other alternatives; the ones sold by Dandy are a similar design to what I have, but the fact they have to be ground down to fit sounds a bit of an unpleasant bodge.
Any recommendations which of the national chains can best take off the old nuts; last time I had a garage remove locking wheel nuts, it involved chisels and a blow torch…
Do you have a photo of your current locking nuts SAZ? Thanks for the info regarding the supesesion of the OE nuts, did that part number change or just the supplied part? Was the dealer able to order the number I stated or did it come up not available?
They were fetched from stock, and the parts guy (Milcars) said these were the new part. Part number was listed as 410077692.
Googling finds this: http://www.mazda-accessories.com/acatalog/Mazda_MX5__NA_NB__Alloy_Wheels.html
So £16.80 from Milcars Mazda seems a very good deal if this is the sort of locking wheel nut you need.
The wheel nuts I have on right now are pretty much identical to a set I brought for my previous Roadster from a Mazda dealer, and these came in a packet indicating they were made by Mountney. I can’t find a Mountney application chart now.
The nuts I have at the moment are similar to the Dandy ones, but not cut down: http://www.mazda-mx5-shop.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25&products_id=89
Hhmm, did the parts guy put the number I gave you in the computer and found out it was no longer available? Actually, I’ll look into it & update the old post accordingly. But yes, 410077692 is not a good supersession for the Mazda Japan supplied locking wheel nuts.
SAZ, I am able to order the locking wheel nuts by the part number I originaly quoted. They are around £15. Assuming the correct part turns up, Do you want me to order them and post them up to you? I also have a tool for removing old lockers if you are interested.
Thanks for the offer; I’m popping over to Milcars tomorrow to return the nuts, and try them again. I’ll keep you posted. I’m going to need new tyres soon, so I need to get this sorted soon.
Got the reply from Milcars; it seems the old part is no longer in stock in the UK, so it needs to come from Belgium etc. I’ve gone ahead and ordered it, and willlet you know.
In the meantime; is your “removal tool” one of these sockets that rip into rounded nuts? Might be interested in borrowing it.
Reseach completed, ordered JDM lock nuts yesterday at about 4:30pm , they arrived this morning! So still available.
The removal tool is one that cuts into the nut to remove it yes. Depends on the deapth of the nut and the size of the hole in the wheel. You are welcome to try it.
My local Mazda dealer charged £15 for the incorrect McGuard lockset (which is a bargain if anyone actually wants the McGuard locks), then did a straight swap when they got the correct Mazda Japan locks in; they said the price was about the same.
Try another dealer. I used Millcars Mazda in Watford; very switched on when it comes to Roadsters, and not gouging at all.
The correct McGard locking nuts are Part Number 24012 as referenced earlier in the thread. They are a usually bit cheaper on eBay. I was lucky enough to pick up a full set for my BBS wheels for a tenner and they fit fine under the centre caps.
hopefully I can be similarly lucky… so far, the shock of removing the old rims and finding out they are the wrong fitment for those wheelnuts anyway - I went hell for leather and cut the tops off the nuts with a hacksaw!
It’s a good job I got the bbs, because the modified nuts are now the correct fit for those wheels, the old ones were a Toyota rim, which needed the collared style ‘T’ nut which has a captive washer. Don’t know which numpty thought that was a good idea, just glad I found it before I broke a rim at speed…
I just rang them up to check if they still had them after I had done a parts reunited enquiry nearly a year ago!
all good, I was even surprised how really small they are, barely the same as the original wheel nut. so for anyone worried about the bbs centre-cap clearance, this is definitely it!
