Best gearbox oil?

Well done and thanks for the updates.
Glad all went well. :+1:
Just an opinion, but I reckon when you get the wheels back on you will be okay, (hopefully).
When I changed the battery on mine the traction lights came on and stayed on. One went out as I drove it for about a mile. I stopped turned it off and started up again and the lights were gone.
Enjoy. :slightly_smiling_face:

I have one (£10 Ebay MS309 unit) and while they are very handy these cheap basic units don’t cover things like ABS or airbags etc. They only cover the engine and emissions related items. You have to spend more for the comprehensive units. Mind you, given what garages can charge, probably not a bad investment.

I found that Miller’s CRX75w/70 NT+ worked better than the Castrol Syntrans

I think the warning light will clear its self when you drive it with all four wheels turning.

Hi all,

Just an update, FINALLY managed to take her out for a spin today…

Kudos for the recommendations on the Castrol Syntrans oil for the gearbox, the shift is noticeably better. It’s far smoother, the shift is lighter and it finds the gears substantially easier from cold now… Though I think my suspicion about the weak 5th gear synchro is confirmed… No real issues, grinding or otherwise, its just a little stiffer than the rest… Can’t say it causes any issue whatsoever though.

The differential is, I assume, absolutely fine… No way of knowing how it feels :joy:

And lastly, the ABS light went off within 2 seconds of pulling out of the driveway… Result!

So, after 3 weeks and nearly £900 spent on;

Engine oil
Oil filter
Air filter
Spark plugs
PAS fluid change
Brake & clutch fluid change
Coolant change
New Brembo’s all round
New O/S front caliper
Gearbox oil
Diff oil
New drop links all round
New Moss Cobalt sports Backbox
New Backbox hangers
Wheels powder coated anthracite (looks mint against the silver paint and red calipers)
Black inside taper wheel nuts
New gear knob because the old one wore out
New floor mats
IL stubby ariel
Clear side repeaters
Strip and clean of the MAF and throttle body

  • loads of other small sundries that I can’t be bothered to list…

She now drives like a dream!!!

Hope to see you all at an upcoming event when all of this Covid crap is over with :grin:

You managed it all before the sun went in and in time to join the national meet.

Hi Folks, just bought a beauty 2.0ltr sport car is superb except the 1st to 2nd gear change when cold. I changed the trans and gearbox Oil (mechanic did) so not sure what oil was put in. Spoken to many specialist here on the South Coast and now a little confused as to what the answer is. Anyone can give me some guidance and help as she is great to drive and when fully warmed up easy box to use. Was told clutch pedal may need adjusting as well and to change the Gear Lever selector Limiter Plate…
Thanks for advice in advance
Cheers

Many thanks Martin I will contact you in the week and order 2 litres. Do I need anymore for the turret?
Thanks Gavin

It’s up to you what you put in there Gavin. From my POV and experience, it doesn’t matter what goes in the turret as there is nothing in there bar some simple ball joints and levers. You can buy an extra litre of mine or put whatever else in.
To make a comparison, it’s like buying the finest motor oil you can find to lubricate the hinges on a garden gate.

I have gone for Redline MT-90 this time. Currently have Castrol Syntras in the gearbox, so will see if the Redline makes any difference and worth the extra cost

The America owners on Facebook seem to recommend Motorcraft XT-M5-QS, anyone got any experience of this?

I tried to get the MotorCraft (Ford) stuff but couldn’t at the time. I have the Redline stuff in mine. Seems fine, The usual cold changes don’t bother me. Something I’ve had on 3 MX5s and some other cars too.

I’ve tried several; Castrol was a definite improvement from stock (I think Mazda use Total?). A friend provides various lubricants to a number of owners clubs (inc Lotus, BMW M series etc) and recommends Redline and Miller. Biggest improvement I’ve achieved was altering the clutch pedal via the pushrod behind the pedal.
