Best place to fit a TomTom?

I’ve bought a TomTom One V4. I have found the best place to have it would be where the hazzard switch is or in the small cubby hole below it.

Has anyone got a solution on how to fit it there without screws or damaging the dash?

Something like this?

I had something a while ago in a Mondeo to hold a phone.  The holder was wedged bening the air vent, no screws used.

Hi

The best place by far that I found is at the side of the centre consul on the passenger side at about the level of the gear stick. You would need to buy one of the stick on plastic mounts off ebay. They look like a mug coaster and stick onto the side of the center consul with special 3M adhesive. basically it provides a smooth surface similar to the windscreen. These plastic mounts can be stuck anywhere on the dash. The adhesive they use will not damage the dash in anyway but is strong enough to work well. I think they come in packs of three and I have only ever seen them on ebay.

Then use the standard tom tom mount suckered onto this stick on mount and tilt it the the desired angle, absolutely superb and doesnt even get in the way of passengers legs either .

Only problem is you are leaving the mount in position when you leave the car. Might tempt the local tea leaf to have a look in the car to see if the sat nav has been left in.

You can get window stickers that ‘inform’ thieves that you don’t leave things in the car, but I’m not sure if they pay attention to them - you see a lot of builders vans with ‘no tools left inside over night’ - so you never know.

But, to be honest I wipe the little ring that the mount leaves on the windscreen, so I’m not sure if I’d want to leave any sort of bracket.

When I had my Fiesta, before I started Uni’ I left the mount on the windscreen, but took the unit out, because I knew I was only going to park in areas I felt were safe - just Home & Work really - but I would never have left it out when I was parking at the side of the street at Uni’ - even in a very nice area of Edinburgh.

Tomtom one v4 is the one with the integral mount yes ?  So why not just sucker it to the windscreen, its a small enough unt tto stick in your pocket when you leave the car… Thats what I do…

Well thats the beauty of it, the disc stuck to the side of the center consul is not visible from out side really as its black to match the dash, it doesnt look like a tom tom mount at all. Obviously you remove the actual tom tom mount when you remove the tom tom from your car.

here are no sticky circles on the windscreen and none on the mount. It doesnt look like anything just part of the dash.

I wouldnt leave anything in the car anyway as there are to many scum bags around these days.

The advantage of mounting it with the windscreen sucker thingy is that you can glance at it whilst keeping half an eye on the road ahead (almost like a head-up display) - if it is lower down it means taking your eye off the road for a bit.

In addition I have been told that the units like to see the sky (hence why placed on the windscreen) - aids the ability to keep the satelite connection apparently.

I havent tested the theory myself as mine is always stuck to the window. The above might be a lot of tosh but does sound reasonable.

My Sister recently acquired a sat nav (not a tom tom) for Xmas from her cheapskate boyfriend [;)] and this thing almost needs catapulted into orbit in order to pick up a satelite signal.

Anyway - back on topic. (I will start a who hates their sisters boyfriend thread in the appropriate section LOL)[6]

mine sits in the pocket behind the passenger seat
it’s called a map book.

in the other company car- so good to drive who cares if you get lost

I stick mine to the windscreen, more or less in the middle. It ends up leaving little circular sucker marks eventually, but they wipe off fairly easily. As Madboy said, the less between the unit and the satellites, the quicker it’ll pick them up and the more accurate it’ll be, however they do seem to be pretty good at picking the signal up eventually. I’ve often left mine plugged in and stuck it in the glovebox or wherever, and forgotten about it, then I’ll drive into a multistorey car park, and it’ll announce loudly that it “Lost satellite reception”.
I’ve got a Garmin, but having used a TomTom as well, I’d strongly recommend the TomTom. It’s much nicer to use and has a few useful extra features.

Oh, and Joe, a mapbook is all very well, but whilst I can read maps pretty well, and I can drive pretty well, I suspect if I tried to do both at once, I’d have issues! That’s when sat nav is really useful!

My TomTom 520GO picks up the satellites really well, especially if you download the weekly “gps quickfix” from TomTom home - usually got its fix in a few seconds. Mine even picks it up indoors if you are within a metre or so of a window!

See the PocketGPS World website for TomTom vs Garmin arguments - as well as their Speed Camera database. Neil

Well I came up with a different solution on how to mount my TomTom.
Go to my Cardomain page and I’ve added how I did it on the bottom.
