Best tyres - online reviews

I certainly will enjoy them, just 4 days till we get to Germany Dancing

It’s all got very personal hasn’t it.

It would appear if you don’t agree with certain opinions then opinions are not valid.

Anyway, according to my stock list Exalto 2’s are £4 more than Parada 2’s, and most of the other tyres quoted are less including Dunlop, Uniroyal, Toyo and Continental, so I am not sure where this huge price difference is being quoted

Also I can’t agree that people will always default to price, it depends what you want from a tyre and if that were the case why do tyres like V70, A048’s R888 etc even exist?

Back to my point and in my experience on Parada 2 on a MX-5, the car in question, they are not a great track tyre, they over heat, go off and experience rapid wear.

Try reading the thread Nick, the price difference is all there to see, and yes it has got a bit personal with far too many people talking bollaux abot Toyo being better than Yoko and Federal being twice as good as both of them Rolling eyes

Everyone is entitled to an opinion that is what the forum is about, its the knowlege that counts.

By the way Nick, which particular brand and type of tyre do you personally recommend for a loaded car trailer being towed at 100mph + on a public road, mate?

Dr. EunosGeek

I would never recommend you tow a trailer at 100 + on any road.

Post edited to save further embarrassment. Rolling eyes however around a year ago on our way back from Germany we were slghtly astonished to see a black Volvo estate towing a trailer with a Mazda On Track stickered-up track-dog Mk1 at well in excess of 100mph - the suicidal Volvo being driven by an Area Coordinator for this very club, any guesses who?

Dr Eunos, I am sure you are aware that the forum sends a copy of the original post as an email to all subscribed so I am really not sure what your agenda is here. For me I would really like to end this amicably because, unfortunately, having taken your advice and reread the thread, all I can actually see is you trying to bully your opinion through anyone who dares to have a different opinion and so, in an attempt to end this, while I expect so potentially abusive response, I will say my bit and be done.

Firstly, let me respond to this.

I did read the thread. What I saw is that you were the one adamantly claiming the Toyo T1R are the best possible tyre to fit to an MX-5 and basically anyone that did not heed your advice was wrong. You then decide the Yoko is the best tyre in the second part of the thread and as from your above post, anyone not agreeing with you is wrong. Since you and me are the only people to mention Federal, the only person saying they are twice as good is you. Mike Nicholls said he had bought 17" rims and asked for a recommendation for a track capable tyre, which the tyre in question very much is, and it will out perform all of the other tyres listed here for grip, consistency and durability on track. It also happens to be a very good road tyre, which is actually what Federal class it as. I don’t know why that upsets you so much.

Am I talking bollaux? I am lucky enough to have either driven or passengered in literally hundreds of MX-5’s on just about every tyre going, I always look at what tyres a car is on. I have used many sets of T1R’s, I have a set of Rain Sports on my car at the moment, I have another car on Kumho KH31 and in the past year I have driven many miles on tyres from Silverstone, Marangoni, Federal, Toyo, Kumho, Hankook, Michelin, Continental, Avon and Pirelli that I can remember. I have access to most of the major tyre distributors price lists and I can see from them, what I already knew, that in 195 50 15, and I supplied over 300 of this size tyre alone since March,  90% of the tyres, from budget to Michelin are all within £10 of each other. Yes you can get deals on the internet, but on average you are going to pay £50 to £60 to have tyres fitted. I know everyone has a story of getting them fitted for a fiver and a packet of biscuits, but even if that is the case, tyre fitters can’t make a living out of fitting tyres for a fiver, so you are one of the lucky ones if that is the case.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion that is what the forum is about, its the knowlege that counts.

So my opinion, based on my experience of using these tyres across their whole life is. Toyo T1R work well on the car but there are equally good ones around at similar price from other brands. Compared to most budget brands they are excellent in the wet however, and most road drivers will never come across this problem, their wet grip is nothing to write home about and they don’t give too much feed back when they do let go you have to be on the ball to catch it. The Uniroyal offers far more wet grip.

The Yoko PS2 gives nothing special on track, on RaceWorx we expected far more, we got little wet grip, and no better dry grip than worn T1R’s. When pushed they over heated quickly, went off and wore away in just two trackdays. They will be fine at the Ring, the corners don’t come up quickly enough to stress them.

Finally, having slated someone for daring to suggest that altering tyre pressures to suit drivers preference you write this.   By the way Nick, which particular brand and type of tyre do you personally recommend for a loaded car trailer being towed at 100mph + on a public road, mate? As you are such a safety conscious person I assume this is levelled at me. If so, what relevance does it have here?

Peace and love and enjoy Germany. Cool

Nick, as you are painfully aware I have a ferry to catch so will keep it brief, plenty of time to address your post properly next week but not this week. I personally feel if there is any ‘bullying’ regarding trying to get people to spend a lot more on their tyres than they need to then this is coming from you not me. Secondly the reference to towing a trailer at 100mph+ on a public road regards, funnily enough one of the very most dangerous acts I think I have ever witnessed on a public road and involved the very ‘Raceworx’ black and pink MX5 being towed at crazy speed by someone as best described as ‘posessed’ in a Black Volvo. Perhaps there is a similar MX5 on a similar index number and I have it wrong, but what we saw on the way back to the ferry in France was tantamount to total lunacy. Hope that clears things up for you Nick.

Anyway, bye for now catch you on the flip-flop so to speak.

Hi all…I remember my first dip into this particular thread some time back when I was looking for a new set of tyres for our car. It was interesting and valuable to get the very different opinions and experiences of other club members. It helped me to get a balanced view of the situation which finally led to the purchase of a set of Uniroyal Rainsport. For average drivers like us, it has satisfyingly proved to be just as it said on the packet. However, lately the series of postings, entertaining as they are - Jeremy Kyle look out - has become a “last word” fiasco! Come on guys remember “chacun a son gout” from our neighbours across the Channel. If we did not know better we might be persuaded to think that you are an old married couple, or even a new one!!! Time to agree to disagree perhaps?

Hi All, or anyone left with the will to live after most of the bollocks in this thread, anyone got any advice re best tyres on line?

I’m afraid Taff seems to need a forum all of his own judging by the number and nature of postings Zip It!

Fine to have an oppinion and state your case, but this continuous “last word fiasco” is pis***g people off.

Hopefully the mods will take note - I expect more likely to remove this post.

Agreed - And worst of all - if you do come across an interesting looking thread - you can’t find the information 'cos it gets buriedAngry

Yes.  Select a recommended tyre from on line reviews, then speak to someone who’s had them fitted, then make a decision.  So for example, I have Toyo T1R on mine and the car before this one.  They have never let me down, I find them good in the dry and in the wet.  I can get them ordered and delivered and fitted at £200 for 4 online to a recommended garage (via blackcircle etc), or £250 at my local garage.  They last me about 15k - 20k.  Sometimes I drive very slow and sometimes I drive very fast and only very very rarely on track (once a year at most).  The grip, feel, wear, design and cost is perfect for me and my style of driving.

I fully accept that there are those who know a lot more than me and will disagree with my choice and I’m happy with that.  I also accept that there are those who know a lot less than me and will disagree with my choice and I’m happy with that as well.

Life really is too short to get caught up in endless debates, and no wonder our better halves think we’re sad.

So my recommendation is buy the Toyo or buy a completely different one, then get out there and drive.

Dont know if this has already been posted/linked, but it might be of some interest.

I have nankangs on my mk2.5 sport as they cam with the alloys I bought

they seem fine to me except on damp roads when they are a bit twitchy

Are these not Winter tyres ?

IMHO, there are a lot of excellent road tyres available today for road use on our cars, yes, some are better than others in terms of mileage and grip and they are all pretty close really, but there are very few drivers who will be able to exploit the maximum potential of tyres, (and I don’t mean the budget varieties), on the road, which is where the majority of us use our cars after all.

Tyres are a pretty emotive subject as we have all seen, and one man’s meat… Etc, etc.

I’m all for personal recommendations based on experience and passing on tips for the best value for money places to buy, but for goodness sake, let’s behave like grown-ups and stop getting personal and trying to rubbish the opinions of others, keep it clean and keep it light too please?

Thought I’d try to contribute a little to this thread as it has been dormant for a while. Moral of the story is to not have cruddy old tyres.

When I bought my MX5 it had 3 different brands of tyres on; the newest looking of which turned out to be a dodgy part worn that went flat of its own volition doing 5mph on a roundabout after a spirited 400 mile weekend round Wales. Gulp.

Funds only permitted me to replace the rear 2 for Michelin Energy Saver +'s at the rear leaving the old Pirelli P6000s at the front. Having spoken to the previous owner, I reckon the Pirellis were at least 7 years old, but had plenty of tread and no sign of perishing. As soon as the Michelins went on the rear it was obvious how much more grip they offer; all the rear end wanted to do was go straight on and the poor Pirellis at the front could do little to prevent massive understeer.

So now I have just replaced the P6000s with more Michelins (with the older set being moved to the front) and I look forward to seeing if there is much change to the front end grip once I’ve had a chance to drive it more.

You could put Polo’s on the wheels and be better than P6000’s, in my, and just about everyone else’s experience they are just about the worst tyre you can have on a 5. We put them on the back to give drift demos.

Having waded through all the - outspoken - opinions about tyres I decided on 4 Uniroyal Rainsport 2 via Blackcircles. A good price was a consideration but mainly the professed road holding in our great weather. So far the grip in the dry is superb far superior to the Bravoris (spelling?) they replaced, no rain since so cannot comment on that condition. Also liked the tread pattern.

I suspect we wont have too long to wait for a “wet” report Smile
