Black stone chip guard- is this Hammerite?

Hi,

Had a close look today at the black stone chip prevention paint that runs along the bottom of the sills on my Mark 1. Now the thing is there are a few cracks and gaps that need filling in pronto as bare metal is showing through, not good as we all know what happens if left like that.

The thing is i’m wondering what this paint is? is it just black Hammerite or some special sealant type paint? any tips on how to touch these little gaps up?

Cheers

Ben

It’s underseal

Its not underseal; underseal never sets, and is just a bitumen-wax mix. The finish on the MX5 is a black paint put over a stone chip finish, which I think is sometimes called Schutz.

I’ve used Hammerite before to touch this in, though you are best to paint in a whole panel at a time (to a join), because the Hammerite is a bit glossy compared to the Mazda paint.

Cheers Saz

I’ll use the usual primer and then a spot of Hammerite as it’s only a small gap, nothing major and won’t be able to tell unless really close.

Cheers

Ben

@ the Schutz - Steinschlagschutz would be German for stone-chip-protection. BASF Automotive Coatings?

 [edit]
