Afternoon All.
After some closer inspection last night it appears that it’s time I started thinking of changing the pads on the front again. Also
apparently I could do with changing the discs again.
When I changed them last time I ‘just’ stuck with standard discs and pads and I think they’ve lasted approx 45k miles which is
about right.
I was wondering, through people’s experience is it worth opting for upgraded discs and pads or will I only really see the same amount
of life from these too ? … I don’t take the car on track, but do like to ‘keep up with the traffic’ if you get me. The car is a daily runner
and covers around 10-12k a year.
I know they’d look better, but can’t justify splashing out if that’s my only gain.
G’day Ady
How ya goin mate?
I’ve had standard discs and pads for the last few years, and can see no point in changing them
You’ve just missed a complete set offer from MX5parts - can’t recall details, but full set disks & pads for £80 if I remember correctly???
Subscribe to the MX5parts email newsletter - there’s been some great offers.
Hi Geoff !! … things are pretty damn good at the moment thanks.
Things have moved-on somewhat since I last saw you.
Hope things are just as good for you ?
Must admit other than asthetics I did wonder if there’s any ‘great’ advantage. So far it appears not.
I am subscribed to the MX5Parts special offer, and when I saw that thought … crickey that’d be a
bargain if I needed brakes !!! … DOH !!
If it wasn’t yourself Ady, I’d say that if pad & disc life is that important, then stick with the standard ones, and get a Diesel whilst you are at it [:D]
The advantage of upgrading is one of performance, and to be honest if you are getting 45K out of a set of pads (if I read it right), then you are probably as well sticking with the standard ones, because that suggets a very light foot to me - although I am possibly underestimating Mazda pads, but that is 1.5-2X longer than I would have expected on a car like an MX5 when driven as it should be.
I went for EBC Redstuff on mine (with Genuine discs), and the cold performance is probably on a par with the hot performance of the standard setup (on my mk2.5 sport), whereas the hot performance is light years ahead.
As I’ve said on another post recently, it is too early for me to say how brake dust compares, but it doesn’t look to be an issue so far.
The mx5parts offer wasn’t for genuine parts I don’t think, so you’ve not really missed out.
If you get the suspension & handling setup right, you hardly ever need the brakes! [;)] lol
Maybe I just go round corners faster. [;)] hehe.
I’ll have a look into the upgraded jobbies and see if I can justify the cost at the moment.
Must admit i’ve never tried a '5 with upgraded discs and pads so can’t compare, but
touches wood I’ve managed to stop with no problems so far. [:#]
