Breakdown cover - car or personal?

Morning all!Apologies if I’m posting in the wrong place!

I have and 2005 MX-5 1.6 Arctic which is NOT my daily drive and an EV (yes I know!) as well. The last couple of years I’ve switched to personal cover but it’s quite expensive and I’m looking for a cheaper option> Incidentally neither car has had call outs since I’ve had them. I’m looking for advice on either switching back to individual car cover or continuing with personal, but I’m looking for the best value possible i.e. cheap AND comprehensive. Any help gratefully received.

Lots of insurance companies now have breakdown as an extra. I went on the usual compare sites and picked the best deals. I also have two cars, both have their own separate policies and separate breakdown cover policies too, both RAC. I picked the basic cover re RAC covers, you can tailor it to your own needs of course. Beware if it doesn’t cover your older car, some have an age limit/restriction.

We have used Home - AutoAid Breakdown for many years as it covers both of us in any vehicle for what is a reasonable price for comprehensive cover. We have a classic Mini which they cover as well for an additional premium plus an excess.

We have never used them but I know two people who have and were pleased with the service.

Be careful if you look at the add on breakdown cover offered by insurance companies and banks. They often have very limited cover so make sure that all the features that you require are covered.

Thanks Mick. Yes, it’s the car age issue that “forced” me down the personal cover route a few years ago. I’ve always found “add on” breakdown cover to be either car age restricted or excessively expensive, but I will look at it again.

Thanks Malc. It’s nice to hear from an Autoaid user as it is touted by Martin Lewis a lot. There’s only one of me so I’ll explore what the cost is to cover the two vehicles and one person. I agree I don’t think “add-on” cover is viable.

I can also recommend Autoaid and use the MSE affiliate link if you are checking price.
Have a look at the MSE guide here, if you haven’t already:

The only other thing that comes to mind is vehicle age in your case. I recall there being a limit for Autoaid, so check that given yours is 20+ yrs old. A 15yr car age limit applied if I recall, but check.

OK thanks. Very helpful, cheers

You can pay an extra premium to cover a vehicle over 15 years.
