Buying an MX-5 - ND1/2 or new ND3?

As with any extended warranty it’s worth having a forensic read of what’s actually covered and making sure you are happy with the level of cover.

Assuming it’s a direct like for like follow on from the initial manufacturer provided warranty may be an assumption too far.

100% agree, no cover is the same as the manufacturer first 3 years, where a rattle, rubber trim or leather seat wear is often covered along with everything else. Warranty is sometimes less likely in the first 3 years and more vital in latter years but great piece of mind with a big purchase.
The Mazda extended warranty is expensive but a one off payment isn’t too bad compared to what some people pay for 1 months PCP or lease payment.

True…and/or buy car brand which offers a manufacturer warrenty more than the paltry 3 years!

Just an update for you after all your kind and helpful replies - I have bought a secondhand MX5!!

I decided to book a test drive in a 2022 GT Sport Tech MX5 that came into my local Mazda dealer with just 6400 miles on the clock and FMSH at the weekend. It was in the Soul Red Crystal Metallic that I was hoping for and has the cream/stone nappa leather seats which I love… Because it’s the Sport Tech it has all the toys and those lovely seats!

We took it for a test drive yesterday, both felt “this is the one” and after some haggling this morning managed to meet in the middle-ish on prices/trade-in values.

Main agent are warrantying car for a year, servicing it, putting a fresh MOT on it, giving it a ceramic coating and throwing in some new Mazda MX5 mats and a full tank of fuel. So far Snows at Portsmouth have been superb to deal with and pretty fair I think and my Sister who is on her second MX5 uses them for servicing and seems delighted.

It will take a couple of weeks for the finance to come through, but that should be in time for our summer 17 days of leave which means I think I might be about to do my long dreamed of road trip to that Skyfall location near Loch Etive…

As we plan to maybe camp a bit and tour the Highlands for a couple of weeks I’m hoping the adjustable boot rack I have for the Saab 9-3 might fit, but in case it doesn’t, do any of you have any recommendations for boot racks? I’ve seen some that appeal that attach via suckers which presumably reduces the risk of paintwork damage…

Anyway, I can’t wait to get along to some club events and meets and to finally receive the car. I’m attaching some of the obligatory pics I snapped at the dealer yesterday (before it had been prepped).

I was quite surprised when I realised a new one is over £36k in top spec at list price so this one which ended up being around £23k feels like a solid buy.

Congratulations, you will not be disappointed.

Make sure you get the 2 cup holders, and the little tool pouch plus the tyre repair kit and compressor. Also ask them to print out the service record for you as there is no service book anymore.

Nice.
The nappa cream leather goes nice with the red.
Mind you, they may be ~ 36K new now, but they were not in '22. There was a near £2k price hike literally overnight when the ND3 came out, plus another one just now. If I recall it was about bang on £32K then. Still, ~ 10K off for a 6K miler sounds good. Nice looking motor.

I sold 2 lovely MGs 2 years ago, which was tough as I had owned then for over 20 years. I then bought a 2017 MX5 Artic for a simple life. Never looked back and soon forgot about the MGs. I seemed to have been lucky as prices have dropped, so probably sold the MGs at the top of the market. Thoroughly recommend the ND as it has all the latest safety technology which is good for us in our retirement days !!
Will be interested to hear your final decision

My Soul Red RF back in early 22 was just under £31k less the £1.5k dealer contribution so sub £29.5k all in with fuel, tax, mats and illuminated footwell lights.

Good to hear you haven’t missed the MG’s SRL. I’m sure I’m going to feel quite emotional when the TVR goes, but actually right now I’m actually feeling guilty about selling the GT86 more. The TVR has had so much money poured into it and caused me hassles at times (although in fairness it has behaved very well since I practically had it rebuilt!) however the GT86 has been an absolutely wonderful car. Fabulous to drive, stunningly reliable and has never given me even an ounce of trouble. The first one I had actually saved my daughter’s lower legs when we were T boned by a young motorist on a minor road who didn’t realise he needed to give way at a main road crossroads… They’re amazing cars for sure and I have loved my time with both of them.

The orange one was my favourite and that one saved my daughter, the red one is the current daily driver and will be going as part-ex against the MX5. The TVR is going up for sale shortly.

Yes it’s Echo Oscar zero seven…

I’m going to keep the plate as a Bond fan for the MX5!

I was on about that nice red 86

I’ve got the plate on retention presently as it too is a custom plate. I’ve been informed it’s worth around £400. The Toyota is currently running on the EO07 plate…

I bought my as new, 6 year old Arctic ND with 12,000 miles on the clock for less than half the cost of a new one. So I would urge you to find a low mileage car that would be as good as new and save all that money and depreciation !!

Edited/deleted post, as the dealer decided to increase its price by £1,550 in an afternoon, so I’m sure no one wants to give that a plug
