I am sorry if this has been gone through before but I need to put my mind at rest. I have a 2003 1.8 sport 5er with 14356 miles on the clock, but as it six years old should I change the cam belt or leave it until 54/60k miles, does the belt have a shelf life to speak of once its been in use. Shoud I use a Mazda dealer to replace the cam belt if so will the belt/parts carry any warranty so to speak will it be a six year warranty, as Mazda recommend these intervals for cam belts or just 12 months parts and labour warranty ! I will of course change any tensioner/ idler pulleys at the same time.
For your car the only change interval Mazda state for the belt is 54000 miles, no time interval. I’ve worked at a Mazda dealer for near 15 years and can only recall 2 instances of a failed timing belt and never experienced a failed tensioner (on the MX-5). The worst thing that happens to tensioners is they get noisey, so yes no harm in changng the tensioners if finances allow. I normally just check for roughness when the belt is off and only replace is necassary.
