I would be tempted to say WD40 isn’t really a good idea. It’s oil based and oil does nasty things to rubber.
For the hoses etc, I use a sponge pad that you should use for cleaning shoes, £1.99 at Morrisons. When the silicone has run out, just give it a spray with Back to Black and this recharges it. I have been using the same sponge for over 5 years!
ATF/Power steering fluid for rubber hoses.
