I worked for an insurer for 20 years and never heard of such a practice. Sounds illegal to me.

Agreed, I think it’s just a wind-up by the OP. The insurance company, even if they did know he bought springs, wouldn’t do that for fear of the repercussions, both legal and reputational.
If the OP has some tangible input to provide then this thread will be refreshed otherwise it will time out and lock a month after the last post.
