Car insurance, sneaky surveillance

On the face of it - this is either absurd or outrageous. A third-party should not have access to your google search history.

I worked for an insurer for 20 years and never heard of such a practice. Sounds illegal to me.

Agreed, I think it’s just a wind-up by the OP. The insurance company, even if they did know he bought springs, wouldn’t do that for fear of the repercussions, both legal and reputational.
