This is my lift / tilt device which I hope to use (in earnest) to cavity wax every nook and cranny I can. I’m almost done with a 2 year house renovation and took this photo while waiting for concrete footing to go off. I found the “balance” point on the lifter to be about the shut line of door front edge and wing rear edge which just puts a bias to the engine. Pressing down on the boot opening easily allowed me to tilt the car level but would need props fore and aft for safety. Lifter is not fully extended in this photo.
I’m just looking into ramps myself and have seen that many on offer (including the Halfords ones) are going to be too narrow for an MX-5 with our wide tyres. Opie Oils (other retailers are available) do a more suitable pair of wide ramps.
I’ve got a shingle drive and was planning on bolting each ramp to a base made from 600mm x 1000mm x 18mm hardwood ply. I’d also use the carpet trick mentioned above to prevent slippage when driving on. (Probably need a lead-on ramp as well.)
Good or bad idea?
Hi M
Do you mind if I ask which make your lift is, it looks pretty good.
Thank
J
Hi J,
I purchased it from Garage Lifting Equipment Engineers_ BH Repairs on recommendation and have not been disappointed.
Bill is a straight forward chap to deal with so if you are in the market do please give him a ring.
Honestly it makes life so much easier, if you can afford one get one. Over a lifetime the cost is insignificant compared to the benefit.
Thanks for that. I will take a look.
Help please, I tried to add a photo to my recent post re. car lifter device. I can read my post (text) but cannot see photo. Would appreciate advice
I think it’s because you don’t have enough posts? I can see an “edit” pencil and when I click on it I an see your photo. Maybe an admin can sort it.
In the meantime…
Many thanks, much appreciated.
These are mine, wider than old ones and can be raised up even further by using a bottle jack. Very useful
Wow I never dreamt my original post would attract so much attention and bring up so much interesting stuff, thanks all, I think my ramps have earned a reprieve thanks to you all I shall make a point of using them to power wash underneath and see how I feel about them after that. In the meantime I will be interested to see if anything else pops up on here, those lifters look fantastic, I could have done with one in my youth rolling around under cars in the snow and wet etc. Yuck never again …(hopefully )
Re the full car tilting ramps shown above, has anyone used these on slightly uneven old tarmac driveways? I would love to have something like that but I’m concerned that not having a billiard smooth driveway would make it un-usable, or even worse, unsafe!
