I normally do around 1000 miles a year but last year we had a baby, moved house temporarily and my 5 was stored at my parents house. As such it did the two OC rallies and didn’t venture out on any other occasions!
The manufacturer’s claimed purpose it’s an intelligent sensored thing that fills in the torque curve while the turbo spools it’s boost.
Essentially, it is said to eliminate the torque hole of the kind that Subaru/Toyota had to tune out of later GTs.
It senses when the turbo is boosting, then tails off into the background.
In short, no lag but linear acceleration…apparently.
If you floor the thing, the new 48volter motor also adds about 13bhp on a sprint.
In total, the Swift Turbo has circa 140bhp which in a true lightweight is quite sufficient.
0-60 in circa 8 seconds, but club guys maintain that’s just for insurance.
They have GPSd them to 6.5/ 7 seconds with no pax and little fuel.
(Allegedly) But they are grownups…and I saw the results on the screen read out at a track day.
Certainly, the DeaIers car I drove was a bit mental…with better mechanical grip than our 5’s.
Massive stopping power, and all for 45/50mpg tramping on.
I cannot really vouch for the hybrid that much as I was mostly foot buried in the Wilton.
Sticky 17" ALLOYS seem a bit overkill to me …no torque steer at all though.
You can flash them very reliably to 180bhp according to the OC Club. One has just turned 130,ooo miles without a hitch on 180bhp.
Oddly, the Turbos are made in a dedicated line by Suzuki in Japan for some reason…they have less boot space than the 1200cc cars but rumours are its got stiffening bits and chassis mounts are different. So they say. So basically the same body, but a complete developed mechanical departure underneath.
I was smitten TBH. Despite being far too expensive at 23k I stuck a deposit on mine there and then…got a grand off and free “ceramic paint protection”. Aye…I know.
Sounds bl**dy perfect – the canny Scot’s dream.
Please give us a full report when you get this paragon!
I wonder why I dont see any Suzuki presence in Austria – perhaps they are not regarded as Autobahn-ready.
David
Will do David.
Most reports are about 2/3 years out of date. The lastest like mine are blob charted to death and tweaked a fair bit. Far too many silly toys but they go with the territory…you cannot either add or delete. You pick your colour just about.
Im a bit miffed they deleted the CD player in favour of all this ruddy Iphone connectivity but my son will set me up with a solution.
Mine’s “Racing Blue” ![]()
Enjoy it when it comes! As for the colour, I thought the Suzuki lot called it ‘Speedy Blue’ ?
You are correct.
It is now!
Looks like Racing Blue is " so Last Year Luvvies"

I have tons of space on my iphone, but I cant manage to put audio files on it – that’s because I’m a pro audio engineer! The usb sticks are ok, but a bit of a pain to choose what I want to hear.
So I bought myself a “new old stock” Sony CD Discman on Ebay for about 50 quid. Nothing wrong with it at all and it plugs into the aux input.
Given it’s no Miata, it still looks pretty decent. But that’s in kangaroo land – no kangaroos in “Felix Austria”!
David
Just to cheer you up Mick your daily driver is now £35 a year
Well was expecting it.![]()
I’ve got just over 6 months to save up the extra.![]()
Has it just gone up recently, two months ago i taxed my 5 for £220… ![]()
My tax in March this year was:
Vehicle Tax Period: 12 months
Vehicle Tax Amount Paid: GBP 165.00
I think this very fair - My old Diesel Audi Avant was considerably more.
What’s going on?
Confused

There’s quite a wide variation of VED bands for MX-5s, across the generations. I’m presuming yours is a Mk4/ND ?
Because your car was registered post March 2017 when the tax system I described came in. Mine is a 2016 car so I’m under the old CO2 tax regime meaning my ND1 2.0 costs me £240 a year, if it had been 6 months older I’d be paying your £165 ![]()
I think the change was because chasing CO2 emissions meant favouring diesels that had higher NOx and particulate emissions.
Thanks for your replies.
My MX-5 is a 1.5 ND - and I registered it when I bought it new in April 2016.
The difference may be due to cc.
Or maybe DVLA have got it wrong!
![]()
That’s correct for a 2016 registered 1.5 ND.
139g/km CO2 puts it just in Band E, which for 131-140g/km CO2.
Thanks for the confirmation; that’s what I thought.
It’s a very economical car and works for me.

I just renewed my September 2017 2.0 RF on the 1st April and it is now £180 a year.
That’s exactly what we do have with petrol tax.
But that wont stop them from double taxing mileage – just as there is no connection between a given tax and what it is spent on. Let’s not kid ourselves that taxes on tobacco and booze, for instance, go directly to the NHS or a campaign against smoking or excess drinking!
David
No it really isn’t what happens with fuel duty.
Otherwise there wouldn’t be two points of taxation in relation to vehicle usage. It’s delusional to think that the current setup is a proper usage based model…
