The central locking on my 2003 1.8 Sport went haywire today.
Whilst driving along it began to lock the doors then open them, cycling over a period of every 2 to 3 minutes. It then locked the doors with me inside. Not good as the hardtop is presently fitted. However by using the remote plipper the doors opened for a split second allowing me to pull the inside door handle and get out before it immediately locked again.
When I try to open a door the lock unlatches for a second then immediately locks whether I am in the car or outside, using the key or the plipper.
In desperation I took out the fuse for the door locks behind the driver’s wheel.
I’ve tried disconnecting the battery to see if that reboots the system but without any sucess. HELP !
Could be a faulty door key clinder switch (they can suffer from water ingress/damage). Look for a violet & a black wire in each door. With the key in the lock position the should show reistance (950 - 1050 ohms) & in the unlock position they should show zero ohms.
Well well - Came out to car this morning, put the central locking fuse back in its holder and everything is now working as before.
Wouldn’t like it to happen again though - what was a bit scary is that it failed with me in it and just trying to use the interior handle to release myself did not work as the handle was solidly locked. Now I do like spending time in my wee car but this is ridiculous.
Has anybody else had this problem and if so did the central locking fail in the locked position ?
Just for info, can you clarify what the interior handle did? Did it not move at all, or did it open fully but not release the door? The handle does not unlock the door like it does in a lot of (modern) cars - you have to move the wee lock bit to do that - could that have been part of the problem?
I could be very wrong here, I am in the same kind of situation, my initial problem started during the cold mornings, the locking started to bounce upon opening the door, upon entering the cockpit and closing the door the lock only operates the door its attached to, not the entire central locking. I recent drove to Lancashire with a sat nav and the same problem happened upon arrival, so I have a feeling its a faulty battery or a battery losing charge, I will post findings.
I think Phil considering you disconnected the battery and left it, this may have rectified the problem, for the moment. It maybe seeing which variables have changed causing the problem, for me it was cold mornings (wrap my car up now) and the use of a sat nav! (this i can’t go without as I am like Maureen from driving school when it comes to directions and as a well know supermarket says “every little helps!”)
Hope this in someway starts to shed light on the subject
