Sometimes you can find a guide on YouTube that’s where i saw a video for a Mk3.

You just priz the two halves apart with the edge of your finger nail. Behind a black cover that comes off is the watch style battery. Make sure you have the replacement to hand as it will lose its memory if not changed straight away.

Is the procedure not in the Owner’s Manual?

Nothing in the manual, just states “replace battery”

Was loath to exert too much pressure on case but as suggested looked and found video on Google which put my mind at rest and battery has now been successfully replaced.

My central locking system is not terribly responsive.
Are they all like that or is it a symptom of a tired battery??

On which model? On the NC, it’s advantageous to bend the battery contacts slightly to improve their contact with the battery.

I appreciate that you’ve sorted it now, but are you aware of the full Owner’s Manual, downloadable from www.mazda.co.uk, not just the supplied Quick Guide. Key battery replacement is on page 6-33.
