Hi Guys
I will be helping a friend change the front hub / bearing on his 1999 MK2 MX5 this weekend
Never done one before so was just after any tips you guys could give before I start.
I’m thinking remove brake pads -easy
Remove caliper completely - straightforward
Remove brak disc - no probs
Then I’m guesing remove dust cover and crack the 210Nm bolt holding the hub in place.
Will it then slide off or have I missed something?
Thanks
Tony
That’s about it… I’d leave the caliper built up and just undo the 14mm caliper bracket bolts and remove the caliper complete. You may have to wind a bolt into the disc to pop it off. Do you have the correct size socket for the nut? (29mm) and do you have a new stake nut?

Thanks Robibe
I think I will leave the caliper built up as you say then.
I ahve the correct size socket, 29mm (black impact type) So am ready to give it some jip LOL!
Whats the stake nut then? I’ve not heard of that before.
Thanks!!
A stake nut is a nut that you tighten up then “stake” the top into a grove in the shaft to lock it. It’s obvious when you remove the cap.
This is a question I have often wondered about and it is, are both nuts on both front wheels a right hand thread or is one of them a left hand thread?
The hub nuts are right hand thread on both sides.
Thank you for reply, as I seam to remember on the old Mini’s one of them was a left hand threaded.
The torque setting for the hub nut is given as 123 to 160 ft-lbs, what’s the ideal setting for the torque wrench?
Anywhere inbetween, I normally go about halfway so about 140 ft-lbs in this case.
