I was in Halfords today buying an ‘exciting’ warning triangle and beam deflectors (going to France over the weekend). I bought a set of these washer jets whilst I was there:
A word of warning, they don’t fit a mk1. The holes on the underside of the bonnet are with a double-skin section and the new jets aren’t long enough to get the nut on the back or re-fit the washer pipes. A shame as they look good [:(]
Try this to get the nuts on. Obtain a piece of 15mm copper pipe x 100mm long, and gently hammer the the nut into one end, then hammer the sides onto the flat side of the nuts so you have a box spanner. On my car the pipe justs fits into the hole before scewing the nut on.
I used a similar method but with an old length of rubber pipe off of the missus’ MG Midget.
I pierced one side with a bent bit of copper wire and pulled it just clear of the tip of the pipe then wrapped the rest of the wire protruding through the hole id made around the pipe.
Now if you balance the nut, shake-proof washer & a-n-other washer (the washers supplied wont fit the hole on the underside of the bonnet), you can ram it onto the end of the washer jet and as long as you got the wire up the spout of the jet, all washers & nuts will fit neatly into place.Keeping the rubber pipe firmly in place, reach round & hand tighten the washer jet onto the nut. As the jet is 'hex'd', you can use a 14mm (i think) socket to tighten it up. If you're worried about stripping the chrome off of it, wrap a bit of masking tape around it first. Not an easy mod due to the underside of the bonnet but it does work & look quite good. we'll see how they hold up after a year or so!
Mk2 - use flat rubber washer - Angled gives you a shower with the roof down! My Gran topped up her blue rinse!
Agreed about being thirsty, on the MK2 you have to hold the stalk for a time before the wipers engage, so I do a quick spray and push the stalk away manually.
Also make sure they are tightend up properly, they quite happily allow liquid through to escape at the fitting points.
Hope this is useful. Great find by original thread poster!
