alright guys degreased the engine the other day covered all the electrical parts up then rinsed it off and now when i start the car its misfiring like crazy and putting? took the leads off and their was a bit of water on the spark plugs will this cause this unless i take spark plugs out and dry them off?
If the plugs are wet, or even just damp, they will not allow proper combustion - take them out, and let them dry fully.
I would be a bit concerned that water may have seeped in to the engine though
I hope that what he means Ramsay, is that the porcelain tops of the plugs are wet. If the plugs are screwed in properly water cannot get in down the threads.
A quick test, start the car up in the dark, and look for arcing, and dry the offending areas. The coil pack is probably damp as well. Spray a lot of WD40 or Duck Oil around all the electrical stuf, WD40 and Duck oil are first water repellants and then, sort of, lubricants.
Ah, you’re probably right Geoff. Fingers crossed - I think it would be wishful thinking if the ‘bottom’ of the plugs are wet, and there is not water in the engine itself.
No doubt you’re going to love spraying oil over your nice clean engine bay, but it is the safest solution - you don’t really want to run the car in case there is water seeping through to the engine internals.
You can always place an old towel behind/around anything you spray to try to keep the rest of it clean - I’m sure you’d rather be re-cleaning a few things than sitting with a large garden ornament.
Hi Boyo, The seals on the plug leads are not that water proof, If water has seeped down into the sparkplug recesess it is best to blow as much out using an air line before you remove the plugs for cleaning. If it is just damp then its not a problem. It is more likely that the coil pack could cause the problem as if it is damp it can short out between the leads/coil tops.
As Geff said, WD40 is fine to use on all external parts of your engine just wipe off any excess, if used on the coil pack, HT wires etc, it can attract dirt/dust which, attracts moisture, so back to where you started. Best spray and then clean off on those components. WD40 will help to stop that corrosion you find on the aluminium, inlet manifold and camcover. It is petroleum based so take care when using it on the exhaust.
alright guys going to try what you guys said? when i started it she smelt very rich as well ?
If it’s misfiring the unburnt petrol will be shoved down the exhaust - hence the “rich” smell.
One other thing, do not use your car until you have cured your misfire, you can seriously damage the catalytic converter from the unburnt fuel igniting and causing the cat to over heat and possibly melt the core.
