Confused - 1999Mk2 Cobra alarm + central locking

I have a few questions with regard to my new ‘5’, your knowledge and advice would really help!  My car has a cobra alarm and I have a single ‘musical note’ shape remote blipper, my questions are:

When I press the alarm key it arms and locks the drivers door - clearly a solenoid is present.  I have looked in the passenger door and there are three wires which go to a plug from which 2 then go to the door lock.  I dont know whether this is for a switch of some sort or whether this is a small disfunctional solenoid?  Should the passenger door on a 99 Mk2 1.8S have a solenoid? And should it centrally lock.

In the centre console arm rest their is a small plug at the rear - looks a little like a dc power input on a computer.  Is this in someway related to the cobra alarm - I’m wondering if this is the touch switch although I have no fob key type thing.  Otherwise it may be an audio input? or 12V supply although none of my dc supply plugs from a multi adaptor would fit

Cheers IHC

I have a 2000 1.8iS and the passenger door locks when you lock the drivers door… Cant help with any of the rest tho… Sorry

As above - I’ve got a 2000 1.8iS as well, and as sonarbell said, the passenger door locks and unlocks when you lock and unlock the driver’s side, but not vice versa. Clearly there’s only a solenoid in the passenger side. It sounds like your solenoid from the passenger side is missing…

I assume the plug in the centre console is in completely the wrong place to be for a heated rear window? I believe they normally come out of the parcel shelf, so it sounds like it’s not for that! I’m trying to think of anything else which could be in that area, and about the only things I can think of are heated seats or headrest speakers, and I’m pretty sure the mk2 doesn’t have either.

Sorry, that’s probably not very helpful, but I thought it might be worth throwing an idea or two your way!

Thanks for the suggestions.  Given whats been said I wonder if the standard car comes with switch in drivers side and solenoid in passenger side.  Having fitted an alarm the previous owner might of swapped these around to enable drivers side key less entry?  Does anyone know is the switch/solenoid sided or might this be possible?

Re plug under arm rest its not a big electrical plug but a small round hole with centre pin just like a 12V power input from a dc transformer but a slightly different size

The only way to find out is to trace the wire back. Try a meter on the connection, see if there is a voltage with the ignition on/off, also with the radio on/off. Maybe an ipod connection

The bit in the cantre console is the override touch key terminal for the alarm in case of transmitter failure. You are obviously missing the touch keys.

The1.8iS had CDL from the factory, so when installing the Cobra alarm, only 1 solenoid is fitted to the drivers side. This operates the drivers door lock then from that the factory installed CDL operates the passenger side door lock.

HI Mate,

I have just bought a MX-5 and comes with the cobra alarm (I also have the musical note shaped key fob).

My car to unlocks the drivers door but not the passengers…

Did you get your sorted? If so, what was the problem?

Thanks,

Adam.
