I took the car for an emissions re-test this afternoon, after the previously mentioned work was done and after an “Italian tune-up” down the local bypass to get it nicely warmed up.
The CO readings are now 0.20% at fast idle (limit is 0.30%) and 0.07% at natural idle (limit 0.30%).
The HC was just 5 ppm (limit is 200 ppm). Not bad for a car just coming up to its 19th birthday.
The advice I was given by the MOT tester was that he thought the cat itself is getting tired. If there’s a similar problem next time, he advised going straight for that. From past experience he thought that a lot of emissions fails at the age of this car is a failing cat.
I spoke to my MOT tester about “de-catting” cars, DPF removals for diesels, too. The authorities are now taking a very strict view on this and have advised that any garage caught being party to it in future will lose their MOT testing licence.
A bit like the old “broomstick up the baffles” that was a common thing to do to motorcycle silencers some years ago…allegedly, officer!
I bought a new OE quality centre exhaust and cat assembly for this car but never needed to fit it. The car has passed its emissions test every year since I posted this. I sold the car last summer (actually for more than I’d paid for it seven years ago).
If anyone needs a new Mk2 centre section and cat, still in the wrapper, please let me know!
Long shot, but any chance you still have that exhaust/cat? MOT due soon on my 2000 Eunos 1.6. Emissions high last year, but passed because it’s an import. 74000 , so might well be the CAT.
Thanks
