Cutting out when dipping clutch & blowing fuses.

Hi there, I’m a newbie to the site & I’ve got a couple of problems with my Eunos MX5 1.6. Its a Mk1 and has an intermittent cutting out problem. I do a short journey of 7 miles into work and I’ve found that when I am coming down the gears when stopping at lights or to go around a corner or roundabout my car starts to judder when I dip the clutch and the warning lights come on. Sometimes it catches and keeps going but more often than not, it will cut out and I have to turn the ignition while coasting. Very dangerous.

I don’t have the radio on and keep the fan on 1.

I do have to replace the fan belt as it is squeeking on cold damp mornings.

I’m a novice although I do like getting involved in simple project with my car. Any suggestions to what may be causing this cutting out would be greatly appreciated.

Also, the fuse for my dash & rear lights has blown a couple of times (last night on the M23 in rush hour traffic) I have no problems changing the fuses and always keep spares but I’d rather fix the problem if it’s simple enough.

Can anyone help?

G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum

The first problem

New set pf plugs and leads, then get the base timing set as per these instructions http://mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/823.aspx

Second problem, the room fuse is the one thats blowing, see here for the fuses  http://mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/204.aspx

Could be some poor wiring behind the radio, or a bulb filament causing the fuse to blow. Are any of the sidelights, including the repeaters not working?

Sounds like you need to get it to a friendly mechanic…
Get the tickover adjusted properly - there are full instructions in the Tech section, and look into a wiring short problem for the blowing fuse. (it might just be a bulb or dirty holder causing it).

Thanks for the welcome… and the quick response

Re the fuse, after replacing the dash fuse last night, the repeater fuse blew next and I had to drive home without any speedometer, fuel gauge or indicators. Replaced the fuse when I got home and it’s been fine this morning. The radio has been replaced a while ago without problems initially, but I find lately if I use the radio/CD the speakers, they sometimes cut out & then come back on again. Before I replaced the soft top there had been a leak behind the door panel and the original speaker had water damage causing the sound to cut out. Replacing the speakers hasn’t rectified the problem unfortunately. The radio has a 12 disc CD changer behind the seat. When the fuse blew last night it was only the lights that were on & the heater was at 1.

Hi Cheryl, my money is on the wiring behind the stereo, what year/model is your car, it helps when perusing the circuit diagrams?

Hi Geoff,

It’s a Eunos 1990 MK1 1.6.

Ah, dear to my heart, don’t suppose it’s Mariner Blue?

How did you guess?..[:D]
