Dashboard Dimmer Query - Please Help

Hi all,

I’ve just bought a 94 1.8 Eunos (V Special), and have purchased a used dimmer switch from MX5 Heaven to replace one of the blanks to the right of the steering wheel. However when I plug the dimmer into the blue socket that sits behind the dash the instrument cluster lights etc go out (the tail fuse is ok and the lights work fine with the original blank/bridge in place).

So here’s my question, is there something else I need to fit to get this to work, is it simply that you can’t retrofit a dimmer to cars that didn’t come with them… or is it more likely that the dimmer is just faulty???

Thanks in advance [:)]

I take it you’ve tried turning the dimmer wheel to the right? When it’s fully to the left the lights are barely lit.

Yep, no joy… :frowning:

Chack to see if someone has not connected a rear fog lamp up using the wiring for the dimmer. Doing that can affect its operation. You may have to remove the fog lamp wiring and start again from scratch.

Good idea but it’s not that as the rear fog is wired from the white connector block, the blue block is plugged straight into the back of the dimmer…

Hhmm, faulty dimmer maybe then. There are 3 wires in the blue connector aren’t there?

Funnily enough, when I tried a known good switch in a 1996 1.8 Roadster, it did the same. I wasn’t sufficiently bothered to investigate further. Worked fine in a 1991 1.6.

Just to close this off; long story short it was a faulty dimmer switch…

I checked the wiring in the blue connector and had two positive lives (red and red/black) and one earth (black), all of which were working. Called up MX5 Heaven and explained the situation and asked for a replacement switch, sent the old one back on Tuesday, got the new one today and it works fine, HOORAH!

Excellent, glad you got it sorted
