Does a brand new MX5 need rust-proofing in the UK?

Sad that an enthusiast appears to be someone who buys a car but then doesn’t drive it much.

Products arrived this week to do my ND2:

DO IT EARLY is my advice. Having seen some real horrors underneath even pretty new ND’s , and even though my car (2023) is pretty new and a summer car only I made the decision to get mine “rustproofed” as I tend to keep cars a long time. Glad to say as the car was so good underneath there was zero prep work as such needed (removal of rust) so my local friendly garage was able to do the job at a very reasonable cost. (Using black Waxoil) Job involved removal of all wheel arch liners ETC. Job was possibly not as in depth as some that I have seen, but with the car doing only low miles in decent weather I figured it was a good idea to get it done before the dreaded “brown” started to appear. I’d add that if you don’t drive in the salt (you keep it off the roads for much if the winter, except maybe if it’s been hammering down for a week and then dried up), or the wet, I wouldn’t bother. No way I’d have a ‘professional’ all over my car when there’s nothing wrong with it, applying all that stuff, maybe in places it shouldn’t go. I doubt the car is going to totally crumble away right in front of your eyes if it’s only fair weather car. Even more so if you use a garage, or a half cover which keeps the water from going through the rabbit warren of drains. If the car is used ‘as a car’, you know, like most people do in society, in all weathers and seasons, then it’s probably a good idea.

My NC is 12years old and only exhibits surface corrosion underneath. I suspect that if it had been driven on salted roads or lived by the coast then it might have been flagged up by my mechanic or during previous mots. For now though, I have no concerns.

I am in the process of buying a 2022 MX5 for daily driving and plan to keep the car
. Can somebody recommend a place to get this done in the South East (Guildford/Portsmouth area?

My view point is that it doesn’t really matter if you are going to keep it or not. If you have had the car properly under sealed by an approved recognised organisation then it will add value at the time of sale.
Why, because under sealing a car when it has started to rust is pointless unless you take it right back to the bare metal, as all your doing is sealing in the rust which will still continue all be it hopefully at a slower rate.

My main criticism is with Mazda UK, this is something all new cars should already have, it’s their duty if they are remotely bothered about their customers which they obviously aren’t. This is one of the reasons I think why there are Mazda dealers closing down around us as people are not buying new models. After speaking with some of the owners their old cars have failed MOTs on rust and therefore will not buy another one and are changing brands. Obviously these are not enthusiast with MX5 they are just people who bought a Mazda mainly MX5 and Mazda 3s etc just to use them.
