If they can blame leaving the EEC for increasing insurance premiums then they have no trouble convincing themselves you are "accident prone " even if you are not at fault
Last time, this happened to me… someone pulled out of a side road, saw me at the last moment. He almost but not quite managed to stop in time.
Just door damage.
It was 1976. And it was my Triumph TR5. I claimed against his insurer, and indicated that I was open to a deal. They paid me X amount of money.
I bought a TR6 door (same ) from a local scrapyard for £10. Had it resprayed in the correct colour. Fitted it myself.
Job done. And nice little windfall for me. ,
Similar to what happed to me in the Roaring 80’s with my Capri2.8i. I was not convinced I had a new driver’s door, so asked the Ford Main Dealer repairs dept. to produce the proof of parts paperwork. There was a tiny L shaped chip out the original door’s black window surround inside. I knew it was there, they missed it.
I then contacted the insurance company and informed them.
Suffice to say, the car was put elsewhere for a whole new job, and I left the dealer to explain themselves to Zurich. Never went back for servicing either.
Yeah, see that’s the thing. I kinda expected it to go up as I thought it would go down as a fault claim because I obviously couldnt get the other drivers insurance details as they hit and run. But when I checked my details, it’s down as “Non Fault” claim so I hoped that would mean it not affecting my premium. Lesson in life is don’t get hit by uninsured/hit and run drivers! I’ve never parked in that car park again as a few cars have since been damaged there either by other vehicles/vandals.
Do however check the repair fully though, any imperfections report it to the repairer straight away and also your insurance company.

In other words even if it’s not your fault you have made a claim and the premium could go up.

Remember what they ask when you go for a quote?
Have you had any claims or convictions in the last five years regardless of fault?
It’s a claim that has had to be paid out for, therefore risk is seen to have increased.
An insurer takes the position that if you’ve had an accident (regardless of blame), you are more likely to have another within the following two years.
Update - S50 now back from the menders.
They’ve fitted a new door. I’m pleased with the colour match, paint finish on the door, the general fit, and the panel gaps. Door built up nicely and all electrical bits work fine. First impressions, very good…
So far, so to be expected.
Unfortunately, the eye for detail has missed:
tidemark where the new lacquer on adjacent resprayed B-post panel hasn’t been blended - this extends right down the door aperture and forward along the sill:
Plus a ridge of poorly-masked lacquer immediately behind the door aperture:
and overspray on the rear trim…
So back it goes next week. Sigh…
Sorry to hear about this - poor attention to detail, as so often seems to be the case these days! Hope that you get it sorted quickly.
A real shame! What appears to be an excellent fitting job ruined by the painting and finishing! Good luck next week!!
My mate who owns a body shop would fire a painter who did that.
Nice to see the money from our insurance premiums is being well spent!
It’s just annoying. I’m sure 90% of owners would let it go. But I’m fastidious - and know that if I spotted these subtle signs of respray on a car I was thinking of buying, I’d probably walk away. I’m sure it’ll get sorted to my (irritatingly) high standards.

I’ve just bought a used a Mini Cooper as a Valentine’s Day present for my wife and my chum has me well trained on what to look for. Around the door shuts etc are all areas to check for a raised edge which is a giveaway. Done right, you shouldn’t notice it visually and it’s actually more feel than anything else.
Im sure you’ll stand your ground and hopefully, the body shop will make sure it’s right next time as it’s now costing them money to put it right. Personally, I’d also be putting a complaint in to the insurance company.
I run my MK1 and MK2 on Classic Insurance with agreed valuation.
How will i stand if i claimed for a no fault accident with a third party?
That’s bad news Steve sorry to here it, looks like a bit of a bodged rush job to me, poor masking, orange peel lacquer and what looks like as you say over spray on the rear trim which is concerning as it looks like primer, are you sure 100% that is a new door if it is it must have been painted on the car after fitting.
I would have painted the door at least in primer off the car to avoid that problem makes my painting look excellent.
Hope you can get it all sorted soon.
Tim.
To be fair, the quality of the new paint/lacquer is very good - it only looks ‘orange peel-ey’ because the pic is zoomed right in.
Definitely a new door - I removed the door card to check. The door’s all fine - but they’ve sprayed most, if not all of the rear panel from the B-post back, to ensure a perfect match I guess. It’s the attention to the edges of this part of the job - in the areas I’ve photographed - that’s not so great.
We’ll get it sorted.
So just to close this story down, S50 returned a few days ago, for the second time. The niggling details I grumbled about have been properly attended to (including pulling the door latch in one millimeter so that the rear of the door closes totally flush), and I’m pretty pleased with it. The only giveaway now, that something’s been repaired is the lack of hologram identifying sticker on the new door.
Despite this being a ‘no-fault’ claim, I await my insurance renewal invite with interest.
Steve
Glad you got it all sorted out! Understand your concerns about insurance premiums.
There is a lesson here Steve.
Car parks. especially supermarket carparks and MX5s do not go together.
My MK1 inherited with at least 20 little dinks on the drivers door.
My answer to the problem - avoid car parks, so regrettably no supermarket shopping or blissful visits to the local Mall wherever that might be.
All the best.
