Drain plug sealant washers

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Eunos NA 1992
  2. I’m based near: West Yorkshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Sealing washers on drain plugs.

Ok so I’ve managed to remove the dreaded full plug on the gearbox. Gearbox drained and I have new sealing washers to go back on the plugs on the gearbox and differential.

I’ve not drained the diff yet as I had to source a 23mm socket for the filler plug. Why Mazda use two different sizes of heads I do wonder. I’m sure there’s a technical explanation that someone can probably provide here.

To my point, the old washer is crushed on the gearbox drain plug. Can anyone recommend a way to remove it? I know I can buy a new plug but I’d rather keep the original where possible. It’s possible I will have the same issue on the diff plugs too.

Thank you.

Neil.

I usually cut them off with a pair of side cutters.

Thank you side cutters did the trick.

One (the drain plug) is magnetic, the other isn’t. I don’t know whether that’s relevant to head size, but it does make it possible to check that the right one is in the right place after assembly.

Well that’s a good point, thanks
