Drivers side window on a MK2

It has stopped working now and makes grinding noises i have stopped using the window in case it gets stuck any one out their handy or could recommend some one to fix it ?

The window regulator needs replacing.Good idea not to use it as it will break completely and glass will fall in to door.We have perfectly good used ones for sale.PM me if interested

A good clean and lub of the runners and channels often works before buying anything.

Remove the door card and all will be revealed.

Good Luck

Hi,

If your window is making grinding sounds then cleaning/lubricating is unlikely to fix it but it would do no harm to take off the door card to have a look, in the unlikely event that something may have fallen into it and is causing the noise.

You don’t mention if it is a manual window or an electric one but they both work in a similar way. There is a nylon drum - that the cable which pulls the window up and down runs on - and it can wear/break/get chewed up and the cable can get tangled and sometime break. New cables and drums are available from MX-5 parts etc, but can be quite fiddly to fit. You have a couple of other options.

One is to buy a new or 2nd hand unit from eBay or a breaker and either fit it yourself or get it fitted by someone - its not too difficult to do. New units are available for around £60 and s/h around £25-£30. As the window regulators can give trouble it would be better to buy a new replacement rather than s/h if the budget allows for it (after all it will cost the same to fit a S/H unit as it would to fit a new one.

The other alternative - if you don’t want to get your hands dirty - is to get someone to do the complete job for you. I will send you a PM with the phone number of a local specialist who will be able to do this for you if you so wish.
