Exercise caution if you use Peter James insurance for your MX5 mk3/4

Perfect, respect.

Whether it needed to was maybe just a matter of opinion.

@Dawasdave , @WazWii you write about your experience of discussing an insurance quotation with PJI, a condition of taking the specific policy under discussion here is to be a Club Member.

Your forum accounts don’t show Club Member status, if there’s an error in that drop me a PM and we can sort it out. Maybe you were evaluating what the policy could give before signing up.

Surely it depends on the company you go with after pj whether they’ll accept your previous ncb if it’s not been used for a few years.
I don’t see how pj can truefully answer that

Hi,

Yes that is it. I was all set to go with them but then this issue arose. Such a shame. They would have honoured their word if I took the policy out with them in the 30-days they stated but it was too early for me as I was still discussing modifications. Such a shame because this way the modifications are a liability i.e. total loss should something happen.

If someone knows of another insurance company that can cover the value I declare please let me know as I am running out of options.

Thanks.

This thread was useful. Many Thanks.

I’ve just insured my 25AE for another year, with protected maximum NCD.
RAC wanted too much on the renewal, unreasonably so.
Therefore I did some market research and went with LV instead. Not quite the cheapest suggested by the meerkats, but exactly the cover I wanted from a “Named” company.

I have also lost my no claims after working abroad for four years. I spoke with the insurance company and they were helpful.
I am in the postion to run an Mx5 and a modern car (2005 Volvo ) so my no claims is all on the Volvo.
I always ask for a letter showing proof of no claims rather than relying on the remewal notice if I change vehicle or insurers.
I have got a classic car policy on another vehicle that has been in force for over 20 years.
So all this is normal to me and not an issue.
If you are worrried use the club scheme for two years then insure with normal policy for a year then go back to the club scheme which should allow a continuing no claims on a single vehicle.

You can only build up NCD on 1 policy. If your MX5 is an only car, or if you wish to transfer NCD from another car, you need to tell them prior to policy inception. A second car will not build up it’s own NCD unless you use a Group policy for 2+ cars you own and for which you are the registered keeper

Must admit, never been a fan of ‘brokers’ in the times I’ve tired.
In all cases I’ve ended up wasting a few hours of my life to receive quotes, often on behalf of ‘organisations’ with google reviews which would make your hair curl,'…for more money than regular, ‘popular’ insurance companies you see on comparion sites.

Hmm, not necessarily so. Negotiate with your insurer.

I’ve had max NCD on each of our two cars for several decades, and with several different “Named” insurers.

This is the first time I’ve ever used the same insurer for each car in the same year, but on two separate policies with dates several months different.

However, while there are two drivers in our house driving both cars equally, according to LV (yesterday) only the one of us can accrue the NCDs on each of the two car policies. No bother for us as both cars are registered in my name as are the policies.

If in any doubt use the phone and haggle.

I don’t think it’s true you can’t build no claims on more than one policy, however it is true you can only use one lot of ncd on one car (unless the insurer wants your business and ‘mirrors’ the discount). I had to start over on a second car as all my ncd was used on another. The insurer considered my claims free driving years and gave a very good discount to get me started on the second policy - I have since built up ncd on that car from there.

I have my main car on a policy with 20+ years NCD
My Motorcycle is on another policy with 20+ years NCD
My MX5 is on a third policy with 2 years NCD

None of these policies are with the same insurer.

Incorrect.

So two cars, two drivers, one accruing on one car, the other person accruing on the other car? = 1 accrual per person per car. On a joint (group) policy for one owner/keeper?

If so then as described in my original answer, if not then case then yes, I am utterly at fault here.

No. I’m the official NCD accruer, but twice, on a separate policy for each car.
One policy one NCD; two policies two NCDs

Quite a few insurance companies will “mirror” your first cars NCB for a second car.
Then the following year you will have maximum NCB for the second car which you can then go wherever you want.

Club members will find an update on the subject of NCD with Peter James policies in the October 2024 edition of STHT which should be arriving with members now or imminently.
