Factory Fitted Alarm Problem

My Mazda MX5 2003 Charlie’s Angels model has recently developed a problem. About 10 seconds after I lock the car, the horn starts beeping and the hazard lights start flashing. I think I can hear something within the door engaging, then just before the alarm goes off it either re-engages or dis-engages! Any ideas what the problem might be as I am currently not able to lock the door!

Am I right in thinking that the car won’t lock and the alarm won’t set if a door is not properly closed? It may be that a “closed” door is not being sensed as such. How to prove it or fix it is another matter…
