I have a 53 plate MX5 1.8i sport and have ben informed that my diff needs replacing at a cost of £2500.00. Molly, my MX5 has only done 49,000 miles. I am struggling to understand why this has failed. Has anyone else suffered from this problem or is this quite rare. I have spoken to Mazda direct and basically they don’t want to know. I have had this car from New, so wasn’t really expecting something quite so major to go wrong. Can anyone help?
Who told you it needs replacing and do they know the Sport has a LSD?
It’s probably worth getting a 2nd opinion from somewhere, I know a diff and gear box specialist in kent who really knows his stuff, mine has just gone there to have a diff bearing replaced, let me know if you would like the garage details.
if you need a sport diff i have one for sale
Hi, thanks. WHat is a LSD? Apparently my crown wheel and pinion are shot, contaminating the oil and bearings and thus making it beyond repair. I have since obtained a secondhand one from a breakers yard, as I desperately need my car back on the road. Does the MX5 suffer from an inherit differential failure?
Thanks for replying. I have since obtained a secondhand diff as my crown wheel and pinion was shot, which had contaminated the oil and bearings. Unfortunately, I needed to get my car back on the road ASAP.
Do you know, if the MX5 suffers generally from this problem.
[:S]i’m not techical but i’m sure this doesnt happen often. i think you were just unlucky.
