Farewell is for fools!

I could never get rid of my mx5 - I’d sooner see it deteriorate into a pile of rust. But I won’t let that happen. Who else will pledge allegiance to their MX5 right here? Can they dig a big enough hole to bury me with my mx5 when the time comes?

Dedication indeed, not sure i would go that far…

Can they dig a big enough hole to bury me with my mx5 when the time comes?

There was a woman in America who was buried in her Ferrari ( Yes, she was dead ) . They had to put the car in a block of concrete so nobody could dig it up.  Only in America…I hope…

Hi

It’s really dark in here! I went to sleep in my '5 and now I can’t open the doors…I can see dead people.

 Happy new year folks [:D]

This actually crossed my mind the other day. After being (albeit gratefully) ferried about in mates family cars over the NYE period (due to my fondness for a tipple and greater fondness for keeping my license!), I desperately missed the 5 - its a whole different experience of driving. In the long run I probably can’t promise not to one day jump into an Elise or a Trevor (I know, how original), but then again where else could I get this much fun with this kind of reliability? My 1990 mk1 still feels more solid and starts more confidently in the cold than the 99 Fiat Seicento I was running until recently (I wont mention Trevor reliability just incase fans flame the hell out of me for it!). And the roof on the 5 is a darn sight simpler than an Elise! And my Mk1 seems to have a ‘Mary Poppins’s Handbag’ boot - I seem to be able to get LOADS in there!
The engine has 67k on it, so there should be at least another 100k in it (right?) provided I maintain it well and don’t regularly cane it too hard. I drive with respect for the machine (most of the time :P) and I double de-clutch most of the time, so hopefully this will help. Meanwhile, if things change or I have a talent deficiency one day, I’ll probably just get another 5. I have a slight crush on the Mk2 1.8 RS in BRG (I drove a tired and knackered one that felt like it would have been awesome if it had been kept well), so one day who knows.
Having said all of this, this may just be ‘new owner hysteria’ - how long did it take to wear off for you guys? Particularly for those like me who drive their 5 every day.
Cheers [B]

I’ve had my Roadster since sept 2000 and the feelings for it haven’t even started to loose the shine!!!

Before I imported her from the Uk—see STHT December, I tried a Boxter, and an S2000 and they both impressed, but were so bloody good that there was no smile factor. Clinical and booring…I may well be buried in Bluebelle

After only 4 months I am a convert. What Simon says about the Elise is very true. I had a '99 model I ran for 4 years, the first 2 as a daily drive, putting over 40k on in thattime and another 20k before selling it about 2 years ago when I was not using it enough to justify keeping it. It was a wonderful car and I spent quite a lot on it over the years, but it is very compromised as a daily driver.

I used to say (only half joking) that “it only had 2 seats so you could not take all your mates out, there was no lugage space so you could not do lots of shopping”, but on the plus side, “it only had 2 seats so you could not take all your mates out and there was no lugage space so you could not do lots of shopping”, [:)]

Went from the Elise to diesel Passat as I felt if I went to a more ‘ordinary’ sports car I would miss all it’s good points (make that great points). Two years later I was missing that ‘wind in the hair’ feeling and decided the Eunos has all the plusses I need with much fewer compromises. Part of the beauty of them both is that you can have lots of fun at relativly low speeds. I used to go on lots of group runs in the Elise and from time to time, along with 20 Elises we would get a Ferrari or a Porsche come along for the drive and we would run them into the ground. They could go so much faster between the corners but we could beat then on the twisties every time, plus they would burn out their brakes such a lot. The bottom line is you can not beat physics. Colin Chapman had the right idea, the best way to improve performance is to “add lightness” which is part of the reason I love the Mk1.

This was going to be a short post, blokes eh.

This thread is now getting ridiculous - have you heard yourselves? - “I want to be buried in my car…” [+o(]
[:S]

Sounds to me like the comment of one who had a cr*p christmas and is experiencing a gloomy start to 2009[;)]-----

I’m not too sure about the ‘being buried with’ but mine is certainly with me for life.
It actually does make up part of my will. [au]

Having said all of this, this may just be ‘new owner hysteria’ - how long did it take to wear off for you guys? Particularly for those like me who drive their 5 every day.

You’ve just changed your life.

It doesn’t wear off - it just gets more addictive. Started with one white Roadster we were going to share 5-6 years ago - now we have three - one each for ‘daily drivers’ and one rare beastie for high days and holidays. (And we still keep looking at others.)

This phenomenon is not unusual. Friend of mine started with one, now has two and is looking for a third. Another has recently bought his first and is already looking for a second.

There’s something about the car that induces a grin from yards away. It gets wider as you settle into the drivers seat and becomes fixed from ear to ear when it starts moving

Thanks for the comment Geoff, but there was no inflection about Christmas (which was fab, but thanks for your concern), and 2009 promises to be a very good year for our family (again, I appreciate your worries).
My comment was directed at the ridiculous notion of being buried in your car, and was not to be confused by anyone as a statement of the recent Christmas holiday and New Year prospects (did I mention we had an excellent Christmas, and that 2009 was looking to be rather good?).
So really I fail to see any point in your response - unless of course it was to be taken in a humerous light???

Hi Goof, after 8900 posts on the old forum and 489 on this one, you should know by now that I always try to inject a bit of humour when I think that people are taking themselves too seriously. Such was the case with this post, I’m glad you had a good xmas and the new year is looking promising for you, lets all remember that this is a forum about 1 car, the MX5, it’s not a life or death issue. Can we all just enjoy the experience and stop being so b*****y miserable?[;)][:)][ip]

 [:D]
Am always happy!
Look - more smilies! - [8-|]

As ive sold up 3 times now im not sure im qualified to post on this thread in a positive light.
However, I seem to be driving for over an hour tomorrow morning to view a little car of some description not unlike those mentioned on this forum, so maybe my epitaph would say “He liked buying MX-5’s”.

nice to see you looking to get back in a 5…  [:D]

New owner hysteria… yeah that feeling was great 8 years ago. Driving the machine back home for the very first time. Ah the days when I can remember seeing no other MX5s on the road, the days when I was faster than everyone else… Now of course, every third car I pass is an MX5 - albeit not usually the original and the best Mk1 (!!) And everyone else drives faster than me now. They also like driving up my a*se I’d like to add!!! How dare they. Only coz they want a piece of the MX5 - pah!

I love fixing stuff on my car (that doesn’t sound good does it if there’s always something to fix!). But I find that rather exciting. I love its zippiness. Yes - someone here mentioned that there’s something about the MX5 that makes you smile…that’s definitely true. After a long day at work and a gruelling walk up a very steep hill (I live too close to bother taking my MX5 down to work every day and the exercise comes in handy), I spot my MX5 on the driveway and it always brings a ridiculous smile to my face and a tear to my eye. Sniff. HA!
