Firefox convert

Hi Guys, I’m trying Firefox, and am quite enjoying the experience, so much faster and less fussy than IE7. One querie though. If I look at the posts since last visit, when I click on a topic, read it, and press back, the topic I last visited is still there. I’ve tried re fresh and it makes no difference. It’s spoiuling an otherwise enjoable browser?

That’s also one of the issues with Safari too.

I actually find that feature an advantage as its sitll got everything from that snapshot off time.

Ive been a firefox fan for some time. Even though I always run loads of various security things, I found that the number that get through now I use Firefox is massively diminished.

I don’t get that effect with Firefox. It’s weird that forum quirks like this affect only some users.By the way, if you actually like the effect, and don’t want messages to disappear from the list as you read them, just click on the “Active” pane title further down the sidebar. That gives you a list which is essentially the same as the “Messages you have not read” list, except that the titles don’t disappear as you read them.

Just incase you didn’t know, you can drag some of your favourites onto the toolbar in Firefox, like this

I was hoping for big things from Chrome, the newer browser.

However, while some of its features are muchg much better im still getting more incompatibility issues with some sites than Id like. The sandboxing system is excellent though.

As a browser it’s brilliant!

Do you also not get the Spell Checker when composing a MX5OC forum post?

I don’t get the issue you get Geoff with the Back and New Posts.

Browser’s great, much faster than before, can’t find spell check. original problem has cured itself with a re boot of the browser

Just converted yesterday as it happens after friend sang praises of latest version (especially Coffee Morning) so still got a lot to explore. Any ‘Top Tips’

There are a few so-called “tweaks” you can do - Google for them (at your own peril!).
Didn’t notice much difference.

You can add-in the spell-checker, and there are quite a few other third-party add-ons around…

There’s also a Filezilla ftp server should you ever need one - basic, but easy!

For FireFox add-ins, try Adblock Plus. It stops annoying ad displays that you don’t want, just right click on the image and select from the menu.
Other ones I have installed are the British English dictionary, an FTP client called FireFTP, and a thing called Web Developer which is excellent if you are designing web pages and want to check the http or css syntax. It is illuminating how many errors this picks up on popular web sites that you would expect to be properly written.

I use the original Adblock with another extension called filterset.G which updates the block list for you. I’ve not tried Adblock Plus for a while though, so they could be pretty similar!
I’ve also got Tree Style Tabs installed, which lets you put the tabs on the side of the window instead of the top (handy with a widescreen monitor!) and lets you sort them into “trees” like the directory view in Explorer. Very handy if you have a lot of tabs open - I frequently have at least 50! Also got one called Fission which puts the progress bar and the address of the link you’re hovering over in the address bar, allowing me to remove the status bar from the bottom of the window, and save even more vertical space!
As for security, I’m running Ubuntu Linux, so it’s a lot less of an issue, but it’s still nice not to have popups or adverts!

Favourite Firefox plugins :

TinyMenu (makes the top “File | Edit | View | etc” bar compressable so it can be removed)
Speed Dial (an opera like configurable speed dial in new tabs)
FireGestures (mouse gestures for browsing {i.e. right click and drag up then down to refresh} )
And of course GreaseMonkey for client-side page javascript.

I’m on Ubuntu too, Hardy atm, gonna skip Intrepid and go straight for Jaunty in April.

Don’t know if it’s a coincidence or a by-product of installing these extension things. But I’ve noticed when you go back a page, to unread posts, the post you’ve just read hasn’t dissapeared like it used to, think I prefer it this way

Oh yeah, I used to use “All-in-one Gestures”, but I use a laptop nearly 100% of the time, so I don’t bother any more. Mouse gestures don’t work so well without a mouse! I’ve considered trying Greasemonkey a few times, but not really had anything push me into it. Tiny menu sounds quite useful - what does it do with the menus, does it let you get them up when you want them, even if you’ve removed them? I’ve just stuck everything onto the same toolbar, so it doesn’t make a lot of difference. I’ve got a wide enough screen (13xx, I think) that there’s still room for the address bar and Google box.
I don’t blame you for skipping Intrepid. It doesn’t really give much, and it feels somewhat slower than Hairy. I skipped Gusty for the same reason, was using Feisty for at least a year! Main reason I’m using Intrepid is for the updated Network Manager. It works flawlessly out of the box with my 3G dongle. I’ve got an Eee running Ubuntu-Eee as well, the version based on Hardy, and I tried installing the latest version of Network Manager on that, again for the 3G dongle, and it works, but not as well as the proper Intrepid install. Generally have to unplug and replug the dongle a couple of times before it’ll connect properly.

Tiny Menu compresses “File | Edit | View | etc” into one “Menu” item containing “File | Edit | etc”, which you can then place on the same toolbar as the address etc. If you’ve got enough room to do that anyway, then, well, I’m jealous
I only previously used GreaseMonkey for the GoogleEnhanced script which places dictionary, wiki, and images results on the right hand side of all google search results. But more recently I used it to fix some issues I don’t like about this site, namely the Posts not Read page and the vertical gray bars. If you have 13" or so, then you might find the gray bars fix useful (see my sig [greasemonkey required]).

Does sound like quite a good idea! I’ll give it a shot, thanks.
This is what mine looks like at the moment (resized a little for forum sensibleness):

I keep meaning to do something about the Ubuntu bars… Move them to the side of the screen again, free up some more vertical space!

With tinymenu. (And the gray bars fix).
