First run out after winter lay up

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __Mk3 NC 2.0 option pack PRHT
  2. I’m based near: __HULL
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: _Took the car out for it’s first run since being stored for winter in a dry garage connected to a CTEK trickle charger since end of last November, drove about 3 miles to the petrol station, put super unleaded fuel in, drove about 200 yards and the eml came on and stayed on, drove about 40 mile round trip with no issues, haven’t had chance to connect to a fault scanner yet but just wondering if anybody had any initial thoughts, it’s never done this before.
    Thanks in advance.

Had the same happen to me few years back…
Straight after fill up also…
Turned out eml tripped by fuel filler cap not tightened enough

Interesting🤔 , thanks for the reply I’ll check that in the morning.

Ok so unfortunately not the fuel cap, put a fault reader on and it showed up P0403 EGR flow circuit malfunction, so the next question is do i clear the fault and drive the car to see if it comes back, but would this cause further problems ?, or do i replace the stepper unit to see if that cures it, its a bit fiddly but doable.
I read somewhere that the Mondeo stepper is compatible but from which model ?.
Cheers all

Don’t think it will damage anything, just an increase in emissions?
Are there any vacuum hoses in relation to system you could check for leaks before attempting egr ?

Increase in emissions might lead to MOT failure ?, I’llhave a thorough check over things at the weekend, between November 2023 and September last year the car only covered 419 miles so having such little use might have caused the issue, I’ll order an EGR and try that if all else fails, thanks for the feedback.

Got access to the top of the egr today, pretty straightforward, removed wiper arms, scuttle and service plate, took about 30mins, the 4 screws on the stepper are tight so I’ve give them a squirt with WD40, going to leave them overnight and hopefully fit the new stepper tomorrow if agw.

A tip for getting the screws undone: Use a good quality, good fitting (Philips or JIS #2) screwdriver with a decent length to it and lean on it with all your weight while gently twisting it to crack the screws off. The last thing that you want to happen if for the tip of the screwdriver to start riding up out of the screw head and damaging it.

Thanks Robbie, i did have a tentative go with a pozi driver earlier but thought better of it, I’ve ordered a long PZ2 magnetic screwdriver which I’m picking up in the morning, also going to position the driver and give each screw a few knocks hoping it might free them off a bit, hopefully this will do the trick, if i round or strip any of the screw heads I’m in trouble as trying to replace the full valve would be beyond me as I’ve seen you need a special tool to remove the bolts and get the valve off.

A PZ2 being Pozidrive? If it’s not too late I’d change that for a Philips #2, Mazda don’t use Pozidrive heads. A good quality Philips #2 will be a worthwhile investment for working on a Mazda.

Yes it’s a pozi drive Robbie, thanks for the heads up, I’ll look for a Phillips #2, much appreciated advice thank you.

Picking up a PH2 long driver in the morning, also changing and sealing the scuttle grommets at the time while I’ve got everything off, I’ve put an endoscopic camera inside the grommet holes and apart from a little surface/ condensation rust all looks ok inside.

Ok mission accomplished, total cost, £54.95 for the valve/stepper, £4.99 for the long driver, took less than 2 hrs in total, some great advice and knowledge on this forum was a great help.

It’s satisfying when the screws release isn’t it!

Massive relief, two gave up easy, the two closest to the bulkhead needed a little persuasion but a few taps on top of the driver and they put their hands up, biggest relief was the EML going off when i re started the engine.
