I’ve just managed to get hold of a Mk2 mohair roof complete with frame and glass heated rear screen which I plan to fit to my 1996 Mk1 1.8iS. I’m pretty sure this is a straightforward exercise looking at Rod’s manual and from previous posts on the old forum but would welcome any extra tips from anyone who has done this? In particular I would like to get the HRW working. There appears to be a plug on the rear shelf behind the passenger seat but what else do I need? Is the wiring already behind the dashboard so do I just need a switch??
As long as the straps are there it is no problem
as to the wiring search on the tag HRW
As you have the hood already on a frame this isn’t a big job to fit.
Two tips though, Firstly, Are you physically fit? If not you might want to remove the seats first (5 bolts and possibly a speaker wire per side). This just gives you a lot more room to move when your in the car knelt facing the wrong way, After I fitted mine I spent 2 days feeling like I’d been kicked in the small of my back…
Secondly, Once you have the frames sides dropped into place but not bolted up you’ll see that theres a small amount of movement Before doing these up I would carefully put the roof nearly up till the catches go onto the hooks just so you know that the frames square (You don’t want to get it all bolted up and find that you need to push the front edge sideways half an inch every time you want to shut it)
Apart from that it’s all pretty much plain sailing.
Thanks for the advice so far guys…appreciated.
Any more last minute tips before I attempt this tomorrow??[:D]
Put something over your boot lid to prevent scratches.
Get a friend to help lift the old roof off and the new one on. Also, Get your friend to drive to your house, That way if you find you’ve misplaced a vital sized spanner or socket you can send him off to Halfords
If its dirty, Jet wash then retreat the whole roof first, Especially around the belt line as this is a pig to do once fitted.
If you have one, I believe you’ll need some glue to refit the covers to the ends of the seat belt tower brace (I can’t see how they CAN come off without breaking the “barb” that holds them on).
While the replacement roof and frame is off the car It might be a good time to put a very small amount of grease on the pivots.
If you can find some Teflon or silicon spray, WIPE a Little on the tops of the rear two roof supports as this will help them “slide” under the mohair easier (DON’T spray it anywhere near the car, If you ever need a respray its a pig to get it all off and WILL cause you problems).
Be prepared to adjust and refit the rain rail clamps a few times so you can get all the material around the rear window taut (Not essential, Just looks better).
Get some duct tape just in case you split the rain rail.
Give your drain holes a prod while the roof’s off, This is the one time you can have a really good rummage around them (I found the one piece MX5 whip aerial seems to almost be designed for this [:D])
If it doesn’t go on as easy as you hoped it would, Don’t get angry… Get a coffee and think “Why?” for a bit !
To be honest, Just the fact that you want to tackle this job says to me that you can do it easily. Once you finish doing this (And you see how it goes together) I’m sure you’ll think “What? That’s it? What the hell was I worryed about?”.
It’s not a difficult job, Just a daunting one… The thought must have gone through your mind a few times “What do I do if I get the old one off and can’t get the new one fitted?” [:|] , I wouldn’t worry, It’s going to be fine.
Job done! Thanks for the tips Mr Reman! [:D]. The only bit I had trouble with was the Mk2 mohair hood with glass HRW had a couple of straps and it wasn’t completely obvious where to attach them. Anyway a bit of research on the net came up with the answer…they fitted to the rain rail either side of the HRW. The design of the Mk2 roof is a lot better…the rain rail is rubber and a lot more durable than the fragile one that came off the Mk1. Absolutely delighted with the finished result. Now I have just got to find the parts to get the HRW working…
