fitting a new interior carpet

so… i have ordered a new red carpet set for my car woooo! will be here in 2 weeks, however… is it straight forward to fit?? have read on dandy cars site that there is an easy way to do it and a hard way! hard way involves removing the dash!! tell me it aint so?!

 any advice appreciated greatly![:D]

The proper way is to remove the dash; the carpet is fixed in place under the heater materix. But the easy way is to cut a slit in the carpet in the bit that goes under the middle of the dash. You might have to use some double sided tape on the carpet either side of the transmission tunnel. To get the old carpet out, I used a bit of brute force and ignoranc; cut and pulled it out. It came out in bits. In my case, I was replacing a carpet that had gone rotten (hint to anyone else; there is a water proof membrane on the underside of the carpet. On the drivers side, it cracks through wear; damp shoes etc will then cause water to leak through the cracks, and cause the underlay to become a sodden mess).

Removing the dash is not hard and can be done in about an hour or so.

Mm? Removed and replaced the carpet in my Mk1 using the ‘cut a slit’ method. In place it’s invisible and meant we didn’t get involved with dash removal.

Where did you order the carpet from? do they do a red one for the mk2?

ordered from prestige auto trim here a link! they are custom making mine so i guess they could do one for you

The Prestige carpets are supplied as sections(Prestige I think can’t mould the large one piece carpet), so it fits differently from factory.

yes i am aware about that but trying to find a moulded red carpet was proving difficult! so this one will do for me as im not too fussed about OEM stuff, as long as it fits i will be happy

cheers

I know this is an old post - but just wondered if anyone could give me a clearer explanantion of where the cut / slit goes?

Before now I’ve lifted the carpet from the floor with some boxes whilst leaving it attached in the centre below the dash, to allow it to dry but this time I want to remove it completely as I think water is getting in at the front (possibly via the screen seal?)

Hi Robbie, thanks for your reply (not sure where its been posted though?). How is the carpet attached under the dash?

I deleted the reply after re-reading the previous posts… the reply wasn’t that informative. Once you start removing the carpet it’ll become obvious where to cut. The carpet isn’t attached as such, it’s more the dash is fitted round it.
