Front coil springs for 2004 nb 1.8vvt

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NB 1.8 vvti
  2. I’m based near: London/Essex
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Front coil springs.
    Hi I’ve put a Lexus 1UZ V8 in a NB, the 1uz engine is 45kg heavier than the 1.8 that came out of it, so the front has dropped approx 2in, but I want to bring it back to look stock (sleeper) does anyone know the spring rates/dimensions of the stock front springs so I can work out what increase in spring rate I need, the front suspension is not that old so I didn’t want to go adjustable coil overs yet! budget etc, I have been told to fit 1989 Ford escort estate rear springs as they are the same dimensions etc but a higher load rating but I’m not sure, any help will be appreciated. Thanks Ian_

Approximate for a set of Tein lowering springs;

Front
305mm long, ~105mm diameter, wire is 11.35mm—

Rear

Stock spring rates (early NB)

R 118lbs

Thanks for your message at least I have a start point

Whoever told you that escort estate is OK this is nowhere near the poundage required, think about it, empty Estate rear end carrying a back seat and lightweight suspension, spring rates maybe 125 to give you some Idea MK1 Golf GTIS were 90lbs ish, we used Scirocco, they were heavy shells same susp set up but stronger sprung… i would suggest that you speak with an outfit that makes springs for rally cars there’s one company i think in Yorkshire , they can calculate and replicate the size and increase the poundage for the extra weight ime it will be way over 220 lbs/inch… at a random guess, and mind that your shocks won’t be any good, you’ll need Konis Or Gaz…to control the compression and rebound with that heavy unit…you just cannot add extra power and weight and treat it with a casual guess, safety always safety and your life matters, as do those of fellow road or track users…will
