funny idle/stalling issues

hi everyone!

im hoping for some help on this here goes!

im having the bouncy idle…checked base idle found out was set to 1000 now reset to what i believe is 800 (the first notch under the 1000) car runs far smother because of this but is stalling far more frequently.

i have bought the self diagnostics test from mx5 parts which im doing 2moz morn but something i noticed this eve was once i got home left her running on idle lightly tapped the throttle and there was a noise and revs immediatly dived to circa 200 revs or lower…im thinking fuel related? one known issue with my car…blowing back box (have a replacement just need to fit)…surely cant all be related to this?

any ideas or suggestions would be much much appreciated!!

Try this stuff, It sorted my idle problems out. One bottle is enough for four tanks full of fuel. Shop around and you may find a shop that has special deals on it.

update

got the backbox replaced today which is good [:)] not so good was i couldnt get the car started until after 3-4 attempts (removing fuel pump fuse, cranking car for 20 secs, replacing fuse) looked a bit silly at the tyre place [:(]. car then ran like a bag of nails and wouldnt keep idle so had to quite often keep the idle up myself manually. got her home and let her sit and cool down. purchased some wynns carb/throttle body cleaner and sprayed and cleaned out the throttle body good and proper…black mess everywhere!! after 5-6 mins of cranking car over she finally starts (plumes of white smoke every where!). warmed herup and sorted out the base idle again…also checked pipes for air leaks (none that i can spot). fingers crossed this will sort this issue out…i will find out by the time i finish my drive to work 2moz

This makes for a good read on bouncy idle issues.

ta i shall take a read [:)]

the bits i did yesterday seems to have done most of the trick…still needs a proper set up tho shes not totally smooth running…maybe i need to find someone in my area to do it

right…led diagnostic test…

fault code 9, 15 and 17…ordering the engine water temp sensor and an oxygen sensor…fingers crossed this’ll fix it

Don’t forget to reset the memory by unplugging the battery and pressing the brake pedal after you have done the work.

update:

changed the engine temp sensor (water thermistor) yesterday…last bolt on coil packs a bit of a pig to get to but hey ho! Reset the ecu by taking the relevant fuse out etc and reset base idle. Went for a drive to some family members, couple of hot starts (wouldnt have started have i tried this before) and a long run…car was fine [:)] rechecked the codes and nothing came up! will leave the oxygen sensor in thats there as back in spec but at least i have a spare if it does go [:)]

still has occasional boucy idle esp on elec loading…next stop switching test!!!

Hi, glad you got better ivebeentired,

This may help, with sleepless the nights trying to solve the issue,

update 2: (has taken 3 days to get on the site!)

Switch test conducted! (as per my mx5parts manual) clutch switch didnt light up or heated rear window, took clutch switch out and cleaned it all up as a bit messy (spring was fine, all one piece) put it all back in and retest…still nothing so ive ordered a 2ndhand newer one off ebay…lets see if that fixes it! tbh now the engine temp sensors done it runs much much better and idle isnt anywhere near as bad as it was but we shall see when the switch is replaced…

thanks for all the suggestion 2 btw [:)]

update 3:

clutch switch replaced and switch test retested…replacement clutch switch works [:)] drove sweet on way to work…didnt miss a beat. drive home with lights, window wipers on was mainly steady occasional lil drop but no yo-yo ing so i think that may be job done!
