Gearbox Whirring

I have a Mk2.5 1.8 2002 Phoenix

Whilst out today she started whiring when I changed gear, but only on steep hills.  A friend suggested that it may be the thrust bearing on the clutch?  When in gear there is no noise, similarly when changing gear going downhill or on the flat there is no noise. 

Does this sound likely and (as it has only just started) could it be due to the extreme cold???

It’s unlikey to be the cold weather as the gearbox components warm up pretty quickly. Have you checked the oil level in the gearbox?----------------
