Here goes with a numpy question, I’ve just got some side skirts for my MK1 in fibre glass. What is the preparation process for painting and what paints should I use.
I have some mixed cellulose.
Thanks in advance
Nick

Hi Nick, most of the add ons I have seen are plain gel coat, though some of them do come primed. The main advice would be do not break through the gel coat.
Get yourself a sheet of 1500 grade wet and dry paper, a small rubber backing block and a house plant sprayer full of clean water. Cut the paper into sheets big enough to cover the block and using the water as a lubricant gently flat the whole surface. All you are doing is getting rid of any surface imperfections, joint lines etc.
A couple of coats of rattle can primer will give a good base for the paint, but rub it down once both coats are fully hardened. Then paint in the colour of your choice. If you do not have access to a good spray gun and air supply, then again a rattle can will do it. If you can get water based paint you will need a hair drier of hot air gun to cure it, but it will lay very flat, which is good.
Finish off with a good 2 K lacquer, 2 coats, and once this is fully cured you can flat it back with your 1500+ water then polish with something like G3 (or even T-cut at a push) then wax to a full shine.
Hope this helps
Peter
You can buy a spray can of special primer for spraying onto plastic and glassfibre BEFORE priming with undercoats. It helps the primer to “stick” better.
